Need a little advice... Someone at work is selling a 96 honda civic DX, automatic. Odometer says 90,000 BUT carfax says someone rolled back the odometer and it really has 140,000 miles!!!
The body on the car is a little rough, the windows go up and down slow...not sure if the timing belt has been repalaced and the airbag light and check engine light are on. Cars runs, drives and shifts great.

Is this car worth 1,000 dollars?

thanks, MIKE

PS. if the timing belt breaks does it ruin the engine?

My girl bought her dx at 90k. It's now at 130k and timing belt just ripped all of it's teeth out along the crank. Take it to a honda tech before you take ownership.

The odometer rollback would make me a little leery, but if it runs and drives okay it may not be a big deal. I'm assuming that you just want this as a daily driver for good gas mileage? The engine in this car in an interference engine meaning that if the timing belt breaks, the pistons will hit your valves and thoroughly mess it up. So I would check and see if it's been replaced. If it hasn't, this can be a rather pricey job if you have it done at a shop ($600+) or you can do it yourself for around $200. Something to consider before dropping a G. Hope this helps.

Sorry...I just realized after my previous reply that this was an old post. 80psi_Z32 shouldn't have replied to it in the first place, but it's my fault for not checking the date myself. My apologies.
