I have an 02 Tahoe with 68k. I noticed a squeeking from under the hood. I assumed it was just a worn out belt so I picked up some belt dressing, sprayed it on and nothing changed. As I listened closer, it sounds to me like it's coming from the AC compressor. I took it back to the dealer they said it's the power steering pulley they'd take care of it. My wife picks it up, I get home start it up and IT'S STILL THERE! Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks-Joe

This is gonna sound weird, but I thought I had the same problem. It ended up being my rear brakes! See the "brake chirping thread". One way to check is to see if the noise changes in frequency when you're standing still and rev the engine. If it changes, it's engine noise, but if not, it is tied to wheels, drivetrain, etc

I've been chasing that prob on a 2000 and I have it down to a bearing in the a/c compressor haven't changed it yet though. Changed every other bearing and tensioner. No fix. Will let u know about the comp...

that's exactly what I thought it sounded like to me! In fact when I had my wife drop it off I told her to tell them it was coming from the ac compressor. They said it was the Power steering pulley. We picked it up and IT WAS STILL THERE, IN FACT IT SOUNDED WORSE! And they had the nerve to call us and say " all set! come get it" My wife needed the truck for a few days so I haven't taken it back yet but this time I'm gonna do it myself. Thanks for the reply and I'll post my results.

HELP--I'm getting a chirping (sometimes squiling) noise under the hood. I've had the tensioner pulley replaced and all others checked. I've also had the A/C and serpentine belts changed. I've had the water pump checked. I've tried belt dressing, only to be told that this makes it worse....AND IT DOES. This chirping still persists!!!! It's driving me CRAZY.

Check your alignment of the power steering pulley. Mine was not aligned with the rest of the pulleys and consquently made a chirping noise. Bought a pulley puller from NAPA and moved it out about 3/16" and it is quiet now.

I had a chirp at higher RPM on my 5.3L. It was the idler pulley. next to the alternator. $30 and it hasn't been back since. hopefully this will help you.

I had the problem and had the ac belt replaced. 3k miles later, I get a noise again and the ac belt breaks. the ac compressor was locking up for no obvious reason. I had to replace the fan clutch and the compressor and we went through a few belts. It works now, but as it comes down to and idle it feels like its going to die, but doesn't. Its running rough now.

a/c belt has broke on me twice but after a couple of months and it only makes that chirping sound when i turn on the a/c other than that it doesnt make that sound i have already replaced both tensioner pulleys and both belts i think it might be the a/c compressor but if not wut else could it be any suggestions
