take a small pipe wrench. place it on the left lower edge of the pulley. take a large cresent wrench or a wrench that fits the nut. it is right handed threads. it should break loose.

I just changed my water pump and found you must have a special wrench to hold the fan. Auto zone have these rentals and you get most of your maney back. I couldn't get the 4.o and the larger engine size didn't fit. You can rent large wrenches from a rental store and make due. You must hold the larger nut from movinging and twist the fan off. Be careful not to knock a hole in your radiator, like I did. The fan you remove may need changed, mine had much blade damage (they are plastic) fan cost $40, shop around at different ford dealers or on line and you need blade count(how many blades). The radiator will come off with just 4 bolts and if you haven't had it refurbished, it would be a good time- costs $50 bucks to due your radiator, when you take it in seperately. Also it is a good time to change your hoses. I also changed mine belts at this time, since I hadn't before. good luck.
