i have an 87 dodge van b250 6 cylinder that stutters after a few miles driving and attempts to stalls. when it happens i pull over and turn it off letting it sit a few minutes then drive again a few miles before it starts again.

we have replaced:

thermostat
fuel pump and filter
ignition coil
distributor cap and rotor button

the last seemed to had corrected the problem allowing the vehilce to drive further distances now, but it will still repeat the problem. perhaps the entire distributor needs replaced, before trying would like any advice or insight though...we are stumped if its a fuel, coolant, electrical or whatever problem. thanks for any responses

Yeah you should have put a hall effect pickup in the distributor too. Plugs and wires would be good to do as well.

This wouldn't have anything to do with your coolant. It's got to be either fuel or electrical.

Also check the routing of your gas line. if it passes too close to a heat source (ie: exhaust pipe or mainfold) the gas could boil in the line and cause a vaper lock. the engine will stall, and you can restart a few minutes later.

Check for a vacuum leak also.

The magnetic (Hall Effect) pick up coil could also be a problem, and is inexpensive to fix. Just remember when setting the gap betwen the coil and reluctor, you need a non-magnetic (brass, aluminum, or plastic) feeler gauge. This mag. p/u coil will usually cause the engine to simply shut down with out warning, and sometimes give you trouble starting or re-starting.

Plug wires or a bad plug, these problems will usually cause the engine to sputter and lose power, but rarely cause the engine to stall, although it could happen.

A glogged gas filter could also be the culpret. I know you said you replaced the filter, but if there is a large amount of dirt or rust in th etank, or if you run the gas tank very low often, you can cause a gas filter to become clogged in a couple of days. Also, check to see that the filter is installed properly. If it in backwards, or if there is an air leak in the rubber hose on either side of the filter, the gas in the line between the filter and the carb could cavitate ( air bubbles in the gas) causing the engine to stumble or stall.

Good luck.
