What is the proper way or improper way to replace the driver door electric window regulator motor? Thanks!

Very carefully. The glass is expensive and the regulator is usually spring loaded.

After you remove the door panel, lower the window halfway down. If it won't move, try holding the window switch and tap on the motor with a small hammer. The shot sometimes brings the motor back to life temporarly. Unplug the motor. Now it's time to support the glass. There are usually four 1/4 inch pop rivets holding the regulator in place. Put a stop on a 1/4 inch drill bit (don't want to drill into the glass) and drill the rivets out. Disconnect it off the glass, and remove from door. Now comes the dangerious part if it's spring loaded. You'll see the large half gear and the frame that the motor is riveted to. If no spring, ignore this: For safety, put something (bolt with washers) the holes in the gear piece to keep it from rotating all the way around when the motor is removed. When this is secured, drill out the motor rivets and you're ready to reinstall.
