Greetings everyone, first and foremost I am definately a n00b when it comes to the subject of engine swapping and I am looking for advice from people who know more on the subject.

I have an 86 300zx non-turbo that recently started knocking EXTREMELY loud. I had some mechanics I know and trust take a look at things and they all tell me it would be some serious work to open the engine up, find out exactly whats wrong with it (wether it be problems with the valves or a rod bearing or whatever). They all say it would be better to just drop a new engine in the car, if I can get ahold of one.

Well, I recently just got a very nice Christmas present from an uncle who knows I needed a new engine. The problem (maybe) is that the engine is from an 88.

I know that the 84 - 86 300zx's are very similar, but I am unsure if putting an 88 engine into an 86 will even work. I do know that the 88 engine is also a non turbo.

Any advice or suggestions would be great. I have been searching a lot on this and just cant seem to find any valid answeres to the question via web searches.

Thanks!!

Scott

I have a Z32 (90-96) so I don't have any hard answers for you but I would imagine the differences to be small, if there is any at all. But you might want to try www.z31.com and they may have more answers for you.

yeah i own a z31 and z32, never really looked into swapping motors. but i am almost a 99.9% positive that the motors will interchange...now would be a fine time to swap in a turbo motor!!!
