I have a 1998 GMC c1500 4.3L v6.....
Its red if that matters haha!

Ok here we go. I have a misfire that happens at a steady speed doesnt matter what speed 30 to 60 mph. Truck is standard (no matter i think)
when i accelerate it quits. or say i have the cruise set it does it but when i start up a hill it quits. same as accelerating.
I get one code which is random misfire. here it what has been replaced so far. Distributor cap, rotor, plugs, wires, coil, module, hall effect (in distributer), Crankshaft position sensor. i think that covers it.
any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same problem with a 96 that I have. Been chasing it for a year now.

I bet its a base timing problem. On the 4.3 I'd try a distributor cap with brass contacts, but with the 305 or 350, I'd find someone who could hook up a scantool and find out what the camshaft offset(or cam retard) was-

I will go today and get a cap with Brass contacts. I will definitely let you guys know what i find.

Quest though how can i tell if my truck has jumped timing. can i do it with a timing light or do i need a scantool.

A scantool that will display cam retard/camshaft offset should tell you if you jumped timing. I think the spec for it on a 4.3 is 0 degrees +/- 20 degrees, but on the V8's is 0 degrees +/- 2 degrees. There have been a few problems with distributor gear wear that have caused similar symptoms, but I have heard nothing about this happening on a 4.3

taking it to the dealer today. $75 dollars they say they will find the problem or not charge me.

Arlo,

Just curious, did you discover what the problem was? I have the exact truck with the exact problem and have struggled to determine what's wrong.
