Rodeo Speakers & Audio

I'm considering redeeming a best buy gift certificate to purchase some new speakers to replace the factory installed ones that my rodeo came with. (1999, 4cyl, 2wd)

Does anyone have any recommendations for the type of speakers that I should be purchasing? I know little about car speakers and would appriciate any purchasing recommendations. I know that my Rodeo takes the 6.5" in the front and 4" in the back.

So far, I have been looking at some Pioneer speakers on the Best Buy website.

I think just about anything you replace them with will sound better. Also, if you still have the factory head unit I would replace that first.

And.... I think the speakers in front and back are both 6.5" You may want to check out crutchfield.com to make sure on the size.

Basically any speaker you can buy @ BestBuy will work. I had Sony Xplod's in my old car and they sounded fine. I'm running Some JL Audio(pricey) in my Rodeo now. Somehow I recall that you have to use 5.25" speakers and not 6's because they are too deep and will hit the glass. Also if you like to turn your music loud and are afraid of blowing speakers, get the extended warranty. ITs basically a no questions asked, we'll replace it on the spot one.

The front doors will accept 6.5", but you'll have to modify the mounting plate to get them to fit.

The Pioneer speakers you have selected are coaxial, meaning they have a built in tweeter. Your doors have a tweeter built in.

My :2cents:
I would recommend you upgrade your 5 1/4" door speaker with a mid/bass woofer (non-coax speaker) and perhaps later upgrade your tweeters. Coaxials for the rear will be fine.

Another thought would be to sink your money into the front door mid/bass and tweeters and leave your rear speakers as is. The rear is usually just for fill. 99% of what you want to listen to is the front channels.

My approach to upgrading a sound system is to consider future mods and expansion. The greatest gain over a stock system will be to add an amplifier. Speakers fail due to too much distortion more often than from to much power. Factory CD players as well as aftermarket players are not big enough to provide sufficient power to drive most speakers. People crank the volume up on low power systems to distorted levels and ruin their speakers. Clean quiet power is the way to go.

Another thought.........
Speaker sensitivity, the higher this value the less power it takes to drive them. Use Watts RMS not peak power when selecting speakers and head units (CD player, radio unit).

Thanks so much for the advice so far.

The speakers in the back are definitely 4". My speakers are not on the sides of the rear cargo space... but are on the roof, just behind the glass hatch. Best buy's website allows you to set preferences to your car's make and model and will only display products that fit your car. 4" in the back, 6.5" on the sides.

Amigo-2k, I have a Pioneer CD player in the dash. Replacing the factory radio and cassette player was done within the same week that I got my car! :) :)

I tried to remove the back panel to expose the 4" speakers today but had difficulty doing so. I'm gonna try to find a guide to that like the ones you posted earlier.

The rear back panel will snap off, but you have to remove the lens cover on the convenience light then remove the exposed screw. Next snap the panel off. A plastic putty knife will help with romoving interior trim pieces like these.

If you buy the rears from Crutchfield, they throw in the adapter so changing out the rears takes about ten minutes and a philips screwdriver, nothing else . . . Kenwood used to make a 5 and quarter that is shallow enough to fit the front doors--I think Crutchfield can tell you the number and then I found them on eBay--no easy in adapters, but not too hard an install. Be sure to use some washers on the mounting screws to make up for the size difference in the speakers and the mounting plate--it's a small difference, but they'll slide around and maybe fall wihtout 'em. If you figure out how to get at the tweeters in the door without taking the truck halfway apart, let me know . . .
