As the car was running and then it started to lose power I would be thinking fuel pump first. A simple check without any tools would be to take the gas cap off and turn the ignition to the on position. Now go to the gas cap area and put your ear by the gas cap area and listen for the wine of the fuel pump. Chiltons or Haynes will give you more sofisticated checking procedures. 300,000 miles is an awful lot of miles. Is this the original fuel pump?

To check for the timing belt, you can easily do one of two things. Either take the distributor cap off and have someone crank the engine. If the rotor moves the timing belt is OK. Another simple test for the timing belt is to remove the oil cap and peer down the cam cover while someone cranks over the engine. If you can see the cams turning, then the timing belt is OK.

You can also check for spark by pulling one of the plugs out and reinserting it into the spark plug wire. Now have someone crank over the engine while you hold the plug near some metal protion of the engine block. Do not hold the spark plug itself, only the rubber boot portion. Do you see a spark?

Good luck with the problem.

Also, when was the last time you changed the fuel filter? They can clog up and stop flow of fuel to the engine.
