92 blazer keeps frying coil...helptweetybirdy 12-21-2004, 01:25 AM Hello, my friend has a 92 vortec blazer. The problem is that his ignition coils keep frying out. It has gone through 2 coils in about 2 weeks. The blazer has died both times after being driven for just a few minutes. Then the coil slowy starts to melt and eventuallly gets hot enough to smell, smoke, and melt. I can't find any noticeable shorts anywhere and all the fuses seem to be fine. Hopefully you all can get me started in the right direction. Thank - Carl BlazerLT 12-21-2004, 01:39 AM What have you checked out? tweetybirdy 12-21-2004, 01:27 PM Basically i have only checked the coil harness and the coil mount. And of course the fuses, but i couldn't find anything wrong with any of those. BlazerLT 12-21-2004, 04:41 PM Check it at night and look for blue spark arcing. Needs to be dead black out to see it. tweetybirdy 12-21-2004, 09:06 PM ya i checked it at night. There is no arcing....basically the coil is just overheating and burning up. Basically i am trying to figure out if this is a common blazer problem. I am thinking it is more of a short somewhere but i don't know where it could be or what would allow it to run for sometime and then finally fry out. BlazerLT 12-21-2004, 09:12 PM I would check the wiring harness and the coil to distributor wire going to the coil for shorts. Fireplug 12-22-2004, 11:15 AM The first thing I would check is how many volts to you have going to the coil?? in the 12-14 volt range. If not check alternator out put that its not to high Also check the grounds. High ground resistense will overheat a coil vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
