I went outside this morning to turn on my 99 2500 to warm up the truck and melt the snow and ice off the windshield, and as soon as I clicked the key over in the ignition, the damn passenger airbag blows! What in the world could cause that?

Just had a funny visual as I usually go in through the passenger side of my truck to start it on winter mornings.(closer to where I come out of the house) That would have scared the crap out of me! LOL

Call the dealership that should be under warranty for that.

Question:
If one does pop accident or not do you legally have to replace it?

For a '99 no, for any other year not until they require by law passenger side air bags in all vehicles made that model year. As far as I know they haven't made that an official requirement yet.

I saw this special on one night for firefighters. It showed a water mellon right next to the air bag in the steering wheel. They set the air bag off from out side and it disentegrated the water melon. So, be careful boys...

That's why I always disconnect my battery before working in and around the steering column.

I appreciate all the info. Ya'll were right about one thing. It scared the shit out of me. Anybody know of a good interior steam cleaner? I think I am just going to replace the piece in front of the airbag and completely disconnect them. I have never liked the dang things anyway.

It's a good question and my son just asked the same thing. He just set off both his airbags in his Olds Cutlass by running off the road and taking out the support under the radiator on a rock. He just wanted to get the bag in the wheel replaced.

Here's how I answered it for him.

I told him to think about this. He's driving one of his friends around and gets in an accident. It doesn't matter what kind, head-on, one car into a tree, etc... Anyway, his friend gets his face smashed pretty badly and will never look the same. Oh and by the way, his friends father is an attorney who has just found out that there was no airbag on the passenger side because HE CHOSE not to replace it.

He got the picture instantly and replaced both of the airbags.

Okay, okay what about CHOSING to turn the passenger airbag off, on a vehicle where you have that option? Say your in an accident and your passenger gets hurt because you CHOSE to have the airbag turned off and HIS father is an attorney.

Not wanting to stir any sh*t, I actually serious when I ask about what the result of that situation could be?

I was presented with the same situation when I wanted to disconnect the passenger airbag in my wifes Jeep so she could haul a three year old in the front. Is there really a difference in chosing to disconnect an airbag opposed to chosing to turn one off?

I agree, what if...

It is a good question.

I am glad my 1 ton does not come with the passager air bag. I can not see why a 1 ton if safer but whatever fits.

Merry X-mas.

The last couple of nights my wife has been turning the outside X-mas lights off around mid-night but when I went to work the next morning the lights are on.. Last night I talked to her about this and she said that she is turning the lights off every night.

Well last night I turned out lights off at 10:00pm. Played computer games until 1:00am. Walked by the front door and notice our lights were on.

Turn them off and went to take a shower. Walked by again and they were on again. Turn off. I walked outside and notice that everybodies lights were on.

I think someone is doing this to see of someone is home or not.

Something to think about.

Tonight I saw a surprise to them.

There are no legal rammifications for disabling or disconnecting a passenger side air bag because they are neither legally required (AFAIK) nor are they proven to be safe or harmless in majority of situations. If you lied to the passenger that there was or wasn't an airbag and the passenger was injured by the presence or lack of an airbag then you could be in serious trouble but only then can you be held personally responsible.

And with scenario's how about this one what if your friend was riding in your car and you got into a slow speed crash where it was shown that an airbag would not have protected either driver nor passenger but because of deployment the passenger was seriously injured in the face/neck region. Your friends dad is a lawyer and finds that you've had the airbag replaced before when it deployed the first time even though you were given the cheaper alternative of not replacing it. But because you did and his son was injured. It works either way, what you choose to do doesn't legally bind you because there isn't a legal requirement for passenger side airbags. Not to say his dad won't argue his side but you can easily argue yours because it's only opinion.

I think the real problem is that there are too many damn lawyers that make the rest of us crazy.
