Questions about selling my car?Steiner 12-20-2004, 02:14 PM I'm currently financing an '04 Dodge through a credit union. So naturally the car is registered to me but they hold the title. I plan to sell the car early next month via private party. Once I've got a buyer how do I coordinate eveything? I've never sold a car before. BTW...The car was just registered in October so I believe the new owner would only be responsible for a transfer fee of $50 rather than the whole amount of $180. curtis73 12-20-2004, 03:00 PM It makes a big difference where you live... Steiner 12-20-2004, 03:01 PM It makes a big difference where you live... What makes a big difference? I live in the San Francisco Bay Area. curtis73 12-20-2004, 03:45 PM Because in PA, the new owner's registration starts at the time of purchase, not by the date on the tag. In PA, the tag is associated with the owner, not the car. Transfer fees are very different if the tag goes with the car or not. In Louisiana, its different by Parish. In Metarie you have to pay to transfer tags. In Baton Rouge you have to take the car to the DOT for inspection and it costs $37. In Florida you have to buy a new plate. In ontario, the law allows the lending agent to charge fees for not completing the term of the loan. Very important where you live. :) Legally there are different requirements for transferring leins as well. In CA its pretty easy just using an automotive notary like AAA, but in many states you have to go to a dealer. Some states require a representative from the lending firm confirm the transfer by either fax, phone, or in person. And that's just from the four states I know. :) I'd say your best course of action is to call AAA and they can fax you a list of requirements and procedures, then double check your requirements for things like smog and time limits as well as fees at this website: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/vr/topbuysell.htm vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
