1993 Escort Lx Canadian timing belt does not move?mpaxton 12-19-2004, 05:41 PM When I was driving down the higway, after putting 10 bucks in gas in, the car died when i turned on the off ramp. I went to go turn it back over and the car wont start. The "Fuel Cutoff" light is now on. I checked my fuel cutoff switch and it is good I checked my fuel pump, and it is good I checked my fuel pump relay module, and it is good I checked my fuel filter and it is good. Then here is the funny thing. I got it towed back to my house and started looking under the hood. I had seen in another post that it may have been my timing belt. So i pulled back the cover and the belt looked fine. I was by myself, so i put a white mark on the belt, cranked the engine and noticed that the white mark did not move. I asked my neighbor to watch it, and the same thing....nothing. The timing belt is in good condition, the teeth are not worn, but the sprockets DONT MOVE at all? I asked an older car guy what he thought and he said that it is possible that the shaft that connects to the sprocket might not be turning the bottom sprocket? Any suggestions as to what I might have to do to fix that? Thank in advance. I hope that this is as detailed as possible. jeffescortlx 12-19-2004, 09:09 PM The fuel cut out light is on just because the motor is'nt running, does'nt nessacarly have to be related to the fuel system. Pull off your timing belt and take a closer look. The belt tentioner maybe came loose. mpaxton 12-19-2004, 10:23 PM The belt is good and tight... Ne other suggestions? javatrooper 12-19-2004, 11:04 PM check and made sure that the key that holds the crank sprocket to the crank is in place. it it is seared, the crank could turn but not turn the sprocket. mpaxton 12-20-2004, 12:56 AM How difficult is it to replace the "key" that holds the sprocket to the shaft? Does either the sprocket or the shaft have to be replaced / repaired? Thanks. javatrooper 12-20-2004, 10:38 PM shouldn't be difficult at all. the sprocket or shaft should be all right but only a good look will tell you if either are damaged. post a follow up and give us the diagnosis. javatrooper 12-20-2004, 10:40 PM you will have to remove the sprocket to incert the new key. use a brass punch to remove the old key to prevent damange to the crankshaft/camshaft whichever it it. mpaxton 12-21-2004, 02:43 AM ok, will do. I am going to work on it tonight and see if i can get into that area of the engine with the tools i have. Ne suggestions on the best way to get into that area easily? Arnoldtheskier 12-21-2004, 11:57 AM Chevettes used to do that.Quit.Crank'd spin away..AND the crank sprocket..WHILE the cam belt stayed STILL. BECAUSE..LOL..where the crank sprocket teeth intersected the cam belt teeth.THIS is where the teeth got torn off OR where the belt stopped. The crank sprocket teeth were just spinnning against a bare TOOTHLESS spot in the belt. What ACTUALLY happens is the thing quits..because a couple teeth go south..THEN either the engine continues rotatating and the crank sprocket PULLS the belt around by it's teeth 'till the bald spot on the belt..OR this happens when you crank it.Most likely the belt.Couild also be as mentioned the sprocket loose/key. javatrooper 12-21-2004, 02:44 PM easy access by removing the plastic splash guard in the wheel wheel. just a couple of 10 mm bolts. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
