Can I replace FWD trans with AWD trans?

I have two 91 Caravans, both 3.3L. The one with front wheel drive
will not move in reverse, and goes forward only for a few hundred
feet. There are no bad noises, or leaks. I swapped the shift
solenoid assly with a known good one, no change. The solenoids make
the usual buzzing sounds when shifted into D or R.
I swapped the valve body, again no change. I am thinking of next
swapping the TCM, but don't expect that will fix the problem.

This van was running fine, had no bad tranny symptoms or sounds.
While driving down the road at 55mph, she just coasted to a stop.
Like I said, it won't even try to move in reverse, has limited
movement forward. When first put into Drive there is no slippage at
all, it will drive up those handy home service ramps. Then the
drive just fades away.
Anyway, I have aquired a 91 AWD van 3.3L, smucked in the side, not
worth fixing. If I swap that trans into the FWD, change the controller, not hook up the drive to the rear axle, and maybe change the
wiring harness, will it work?
Has anyone out there done this?
All advise is deeply appreciated.

well on the awd tranny swap I wouldnt do it gearing is very differnt!!!! Plus I do belive the converter will be a differnet spline. Before you go spending more money on parts for your fwd trans pop the output line off and check the out put pressure of the front pump! Just take the clamp loose and remove the rubber line and start her you should get a very hard spray of fluid if not your front pump is gone and time to look at a rebuild or your local u-wrench it store but beware cause they changed gearing and converter splines a lot!!!
