1987 Sierra RS500 - Completed

Hi,

I completed this car today and wanted to share. This is a 1987 Ford Siera RS500 Gr.A as raced in the 1987 Bathurst 1000 in Australia. Kit is 1/24 Tamiya, decals are by DMC.

I have only been registered here a week or so and have to say that this forum is awesome.

Cheers,

AJ

Great model, it's excellent to see this particular kit in a different livery.
Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the nice comments guys. I rarely ever build cars with the box decals for some reason. I like to have more unusual subjects, this a point in case as this particular car in this specific livery never finished a single race!

Also, I have another RS500 kit on it's way too me (Trampio Piumini version) but haven't decided what to do with it yet. Anybody have a particular version they feel stands out above others. The Benson & Hedges one springs to my mind but I do not know if anybody makes decals for that.

Welcome and awsome work!

Very cool car, immaculate build with a nice simple livery.
Are you an ex-pat Aussie, building a Bathurst car and all?

There are a few decal/transkits around for convering the Sierra to a rallycar.

Nope, not an Aussie but an ex-pat Englishman living in NJ.

I have seen the rally transkits but I am not overly enthused with the liveries on offer.

I wouldn't mind building the Kaliber sponsored car from the 1989 BTCC but not sure if anybody does the decals for this one

or the Benson and Hedges car:

Maybe the blue ford rs/gemini livery on the early colin mcrae cosworth?
It may be a lot more work than just putting other decals on but no-one else has that livery. it looks like the panache livery on the auriol transkit but in bleu and without the panache.(couldn't find good pic soory, but if you the car is featured in colin mcrae rally 2)

Excellent result, the Sierra is a great subject for conversions. I'm just about to convert mine into a rally car, i hope it turns out as nice as yours.

I like that one, is that available anywhere online?

Are you going to sand off the front lip of the RS500 to achieve the correct front valance? Looking at the rally cars which are regular Cosworths it seems there are a few things that need to be corrected such as ride height, removing the air jacks etc etc. Thankfully the lower rear spoiler is a seperate part on the RS500 so it can be omitted. Should be fun though!

This looks mad...I wish there was still a GrA catorgory at bathust instead of this V8 supercars bullsh*t.
Great job on the kit. IMO the B&H car next..probably my favorite livery used at bathurst (dont ask me why) or maybe the Peter Brock 05 mobile entry.
Later, Troy

That is a transkit from Renaissance. All parts you need to modify are included in resin. Extra seat, correct wheels, new fuel tank, decals and piece that fills up the space in the bumper. So it should be available on-line. ;)

One in this livery would look good too.

I like that one, there is also a similar one sponsored by OXO, in fact there are a set of decals for that one on eBay right now!

Is that car from the 89 Bathurst?

Hi,

nice model.
Why didnīt you put some wires in the interior?
The rear spoiler appears in the last picture as it is not fixed tight to the sides of the window, maybe you can press it a little more in position.

Nice finish!!

Basically I decided on box stock for now as I have been away from modelling for quite a while and was concentrating primarily on just getting everything right as opposed to modifying anything too much.

Not sure what the deal with the spoiler is, I may detach and re-attach as it certainly isn't perfect. It doesn't look anywhere near as bad in the flesh though.

I have another of these to build so will definitely take care of these types of issues with that one.

They certainly were the days. With the exception of WRC I don't enjoy todays motorsports anywhere near as much as I did back then..

Thanks. The Tamiya Sierra's are curbside though so no engine I'm afraid :(

Yep, they did do the Sierra XR4i that I think had a V6 engine I believe, it's a tough kit to come by. It's known as the Merkur here in the US

they appear on e-bay occasionaly, they are fairly easy to find if you look for a while. i dont know what the engine is like, i've never seen very good pics of the model engine. but i think a rally car like this with the V-6 would be cool. i would buy an XR4i but i'm skint, actually im in debt due to my model buying.

Yes the Tamiya Ford Sierra XR4i is full detail with an excellent 2.8 V6 under the bonnet with most ancilliaries too. All suspension is accurate too. Also in the box is a left- or right-hand drive dash, useful for modifying that RS500... Nice kit all in all.

Technoman

Does anybody here have a spare right hand dash for the Sierra. I have one Aussie and one BTCC touring car to build and need rh dashboards.

TIA

AJ
