4 wheel drive not working

i just recently bought a 86 cherokee and the 4 wheel drive is not working you can put it in 4 wheel drive and the front drive shaft will turn but the front wheels wont turn. Please help.

sounds to me like the hubs are not engaging, I think they are vacuum acuated! I am sure someone here can help you out!

More than likely your jeep has the axle disconnect motor on the front axle. Look on the axle on the passenger side there should be a small motor housing with a vacuum disc with vacuum lines. There is a slide collar that shifts the 2 front axle shafts together. If you want email me jeepman600@aol.com I can send you picture of how you can convert to a manual engagement cost about $ 20-25

neat thing about the manual engagement, you can use low range in two wheel! Great for using low range on pavement!
