Even Simple Jobs can be trouble...Saudade 12-12-2004, 11:02 AM Been driving around with a broken driver's side motor mount for a few weeks now (at least, that's how long I knew it was broken). I already changed the pass side a while back (shoulda checked then!). Anyway, I decided yesterday would be the day to change it. I went to my local Pep Boys and got a replacement for $19. As I scoped out the job, it seemed simple enough. Plenty of room to get the large bolt out and easy access to the mount from under the car. Took only about 20 minutes to get the old one out and that was mostly due to the lack of air tools so I could only turn the nut on the large bolt 1/6 of a turn before repositioning. Sure enough, the bushing had completely separated from the block. Toss it out and got my new one. The new one slipped right in and after a little jiggling got it into position and managed to get the large bolt through OK. Got the stud to pass through the hole and started the nut. Pushed the mount a bit and got the bolt hole to line up (man this is great!!). Started turning the small bolt and it wouldn't engage. Put more pressure on it and still no go. After about 10 minutes I removed the mount to see what the holdup was. The mount has a safety strap but it's rather free to slide around a bit and I noticed that the hole in this strap and the mount plate didn't line up so well. Sooooo, a few taps with the hammer seemed to put things where they belonged. Back to the install. No go!! I still can't get the blasted bolt to start. After another 15 minutes, I decide to remove the airbox and vacuum lines around it to get better access from above. This didn't really help. While it looked as though it SHOULD START (!!!), it wouldn't as long as the main bolt was in and the stud started in it's hole. So I removed the mount and this time started the small bolt first. It still fussed a bit but I got it started. Then I had to align the large bolt holes. Yep, you guessed it, it doesn't line up now either. Well after some cussin', grunting and a generous application of a large pry bar, I finally got everything to line up and FINALLY tightened down all of the bolts. After reinstalling the airbox and checking all of the vacuum lines, I started it up and everything ran fine. WHEW!! So now, I take it down off the jack (jacked WAY high to get the engine weight off the mount) and I hear a "CRACK". I look underneather and discover I somehow broke the knock sensor. I can't figure out how that happened since there was nothing there. So now I need a new knock sensor!! All total this took me 3 1/2 hours!! xj31 12-12-2004, 01:20 PM Bummer.I feel your pain.Makes me appreciate that I work in a shop and have lifts and air tools. Cam7 12-13-2004, 04:42 AM When I hear that this is going to be a Simple Job I know there is trouble comming. Put a remote start in a Chrysler Concorde took 4 times as long as should have, it was supposed to be a simple job! scuba4321 12-13-2004, 09:42 AM Nothing is simple anymore! Saudade 12-13-2004, 09:54 AM It's just funny (in a bad way), that dealing with the problems that have come up on my last few repairs have taken longer than the repair itself. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
