Do I really want an MR2 Spyder?CRX91SiR84 03-03-2002, 12:07 AM Unfortunatly I'm being forced to sell my CRX, and I need to start thinking about and planning my next car. With a brand new MR2 weighing in at only 2,195 pounds and with decent 0-60 and 1/4 mile times, it has drawn my interest. I also have heard that the car has AMAZING handling. My only concern is the aftermarket for this car. How long has the new MR2 Spyder been around, and how small really is the aftermarket? My next car HAS to either be run on the local show circut or local drag strip. How are the aftermarkets for both performance and appearance? ZondaFreak02 05-04-2002, 09:53 PM get it...no joke... there are tons of aftermarket pieces...specially from TRD... handling : great look: great CONVERTIBLE light weight aftermarket appeal: great 3SGTE 05-24-2002, 02:15 AM Well, as far as your concerns, the MRSpyder has only been around so long, and has a much smaller aftermarket compared to that of Hondas. There have been a few with turbo kits put on, and I know of 2 on the mr2 board that have had turbos put on. It IS an awesome handler, but don't drive it like your CRX. If you did, you would probably in a world of trouble. But all in all, GET IT! You won't be dissapointed. Maurice skip 01-30-2003, 12:52 PM I have a 2000 spyder and I love it. Its like driving a big go cart! As far as aftermarket is concerned, more are coming out everyday, including turbos that increase HP to 265 hp! o-60 in 4.5 secs! Lots of handling options and body kits. Superstreet has a couple of pics of one they are giving away that is just BAD!;) On top of that there are hardly any on the road after three years poeple still ask me What kind of car is that?:) DMC12 01-30-2003, 01:05 PM Now I'm going to be very honest here, and it may come across as rude but you've asked for my sincere opinion... so here goes: If you're looking for a new, affordable car to rally-cross then the new MR2 is a decent contender. HOWEVER, in my ever-so-humble opinion, the new body style is repulsive:bloated: Yes, I understand that everyone has his/her own tastes... Edmunds wrote: Though better suited as a weekend car than a daily driver, the MR2 Spyder is the perfect alternative for those suffering from Mazda Miata burnout. Yeah, a car that is best suited for Miata fans that have realized the Miata is boring... OK. Its your money:frog: wild willy 02-01-2003, 08:04 PM I got to go with DMC here..However I am not totaly repulsed. I have Motortrend in front of me now and the MR2/SMT-02 has these performance numbers..0-60 8.5sec and 16.4 in the 1/4 @ 85.6mph. So it appears as if you will have a good run with a Honda Odessy Mini Van..but...numbers say the van will have the edge. It also seems possible that you will be able to hand 2 of the Hyundai's ther ass the Accent and the Santa Fe..the rest will get you. Make sure you stay far away form the New altima...That family car will make you feel as if you've been raped. But go ahead and get it...put 5 K into it and you will be up to running with the rest of the cars If I sound like a smart ass..I am..why would Toyota put out suck a slow ass sports car.....I have one word for you...Women...That is who buys these cars:p Flame on my friends SilverLotus340R 02-01-2003, 10:42 PM not really...i have a few friends here that havent put more than 2 grand in their cars and they are already beating altimas and some damn fast civics. it all depends where you get your parts our local import sales/ tuning store believes heavely in patronage and customer service..so he gives alot of the kids around here breaks on the parts and prices..and if your lucky enough to work for him and his wife...and im not bull shitting you what so ever..they give out parts for christmas. my cousin is a mechanic there and he just boughta supra bone stock and dan (the owner) gave him a new exhaust for a christmas bonus so it just depends where you get stuff and how much you can spend...the mr2 could be running with alotta shit with some minor mods wild willy 02-02-2003, 07:36 AM Silver..I was sort of just playing...But, not really...I think Toyota could have and should have gave the car more balls than it did from the factory As a factory number..180-200 hp would have been adequate given the light weight..that would have made it a real contender:D But, every time I see one..it grows on me a bit...Only one problem..I do not fit in it very well and I am not that big. That car is in need of some bigger wheels those factory little ones look bad and outdated 1ofthesedays 02-06-2003, 09:00 PM personally, i would love to have both cars. the mrs with a kit like the tom's one with varis hood and engine lid and the newer miatas. there are already some turbo kits out there for the mrs such as top secret, a'pexi, and power enterprise. OR you can swap in a 3SGTE from the MR2 turbo like some guys did to the JGTC MR-S. i think there's a guy on the mr2 board who has a 500hp mr2 turbo with stock internals?the only downside i see is the lack of luggage space. some people do not know the full potential of the miata. i've seen one go up against a supra and beat it with an 11 second quarter and the miata is said to have great handling due partly because of the 50/50 weight distribution. if you were crazy enough, you can try to swap a 13b into the miata for around 10g's, that would be fast as hell. i heard somewhere that the miata engine was originally designed for forced induction. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
