build my own intake?

do you guys think that if I took some piping, about 3" and made a cold air intake out of it....but I welded a 3rd opening on the side and ran the piping for a universal front mount intercooler, if the car picked up air from the intake, and the FMI, would it make any difference in power?

because, I mean when your driving against the wind, in comes the air.....and isin't that the point of the FMI?

:disappoin You're never going to make that much boost (if any) that way, nothing worth turboing the motor for. The turbo brings enough air to the motor, and if you have a hole in the pipe then it's just going to release that air and do the opposite of what you want it to do. It'd be like having a huge blow off valve open all the time. The point of the front mount is to cool the air, not get air. Seriously man after questions like that, you should NOT turbo your car. You clearly don't know what you're doing.

lol...sorry, but you're not going to get the ram air effect you're looking for. FMIC don't pick up air, air passes through them cooling the charge that is actually in the IC core.

i think he must be talking about those ridiculous front mount intake air filter things.

Oh those Arospeed things like this? http://www.arospeed.com/product_info.php?cPath=22_37_39&products_id=87
He did say intercooler though, who knows.

ah, yah, he probably meant front mount intake...still gay.

actually....for all of you that "attack" threads with the "you don't know what your doing" crap...it was a question.

I don't plan to turbo anything, I don't even plan to cold air intake anything....I just had the idea, and I wondered if it would work...see, those guys that they call scientists have wild ideas sometimes and they turn out to be great....same thing, just apparently this one wasant great, now was it?

this is the thing, your intake is going to suck air from the shortest path available. It's not going to suck in air from both intakes. If you still have your stock intake on, take off your resonator and then have some one rev your engine while you put your hand in the hole that the resonator was and where the intake is supposed to get air from. You're only going to feel suction from one inlet not both.

Maybe if you stated that it was a hypothetical question to begin with you wouldn't have this problem. And your question does show that you don't know a whole lot of what you're doing, since you didn't know what a intercooler did yet were talking about using one. An intercooler is for turbo only, you can't use it as an intake. Although I guess technically speaking you could, but it'd be far more restrictive than even your stock setup; and therefore pointless unless you wanted to slow your car down and damage your motor. And another thing, those scientists you speak of know what they're doing and have studied their field. They know more than just basic ideas of how things work. I don't mean to be an a$$, but you're way too arrogant; comparing yourself to a real scientist. And you shouldn't be when you don't even know what you're talking about or doing. No one is going to come up with some new way of getting a better intake system or any car part for that matter, unless they have been in the automotive field for year and likely have a degree in engineering. I'm done preaching now. If you don't want people jumping on you for your comments then make it know what exactly your trying to say and why you're asking it.

ahhh, man...apparently this has been blown way out of proportion. See, I shouldn't have to state if I am asking a hypothetical question or not, because that's open to your own interpretation.

I find so often that "car guys" are usually like you, jocko rednecks. I'm sorry man, and I'm not name calling...but that's kinda how it is. You say I'm arrogant because I compare myself to a scientist....yet, some of the smartest men in history, and some of the greatest things have been accomplished by people who didn't have a lot of knowledge of a specific thing, but just had a radical idea.

your right though, I don't have a clue what I'm talking about, that's why I asked...plain and simple...and seriously, find something better to do than rag someone's curiousity.....I mean come on, how old are we now, 10 years old?

I'm arrogant for a reason, btw.....my checking account is all the reason I need to do whatever I want.....but that's not even really a good excuse is it? Who knows man.....merry christmas.

Apexigod, I have to agree with some of the comments here. People come on this forum all the time with strange ideas that will not work or haven't been thought through. People have begun to get a rather short temper with posts such as these. No, that does not make it right to give people a hard time, but it happens. I have seen much worse on here.

By the way, no one cares about your checking account, that was a totally pointless comment and
is only going to cause trouble.

Now please take it easy and remain calm everyone. After all, this is just a car forum and everyone is here because they like cars right?

So are you arrogant cause you think you're rich or because you think you're smart? :thumbsdow

apexigod

no no, I don't think I'm rich....in fact, I'm not rich.

but, I'm well off, upper middle class I guess you could say.....

I was really just lashing out...because like me or not, think what you will...I'm still me, and I'm still married to a pretty girl, have a beautiful little boy, and an extremely easy lifestyle.....I live how most people want to live...aside from huge celebritys that can drop 100mil and laugh about it.

jeez...that's power right there.

j/k
I'm glad you have an easy life, there are a lot of people that wish to be half as well off as you are. There's no point in throwing it around like that.

all of that... and you are 20 years old. wow

wanna know how its done? grow up in north Los Angeles most of your life and then have your parents move you to Tennessee! Alright, that right there gives you an attitude problem.....then, be pissed off and fume like crazy for 3 years, turn 18, rebel...move out, live like shit for about a year and a half...and then REALLY have a fucking attitude problem, wreck 3 cars, and devote 60% of your life to pissing people off.

then...become a stockbroker....man, I made a ton of money doing that.
and yes, at 20 years old.

well i guess now the question is; if u'r so well off, y not just go buy all the proven, thoroughly thought thru/researched/redesigned performance parts instead of trying to be radical? basicly, when it comes to a car mod, if u can think of sumthin new, most likely it's already been thought of.

congrats tho, on making sumthin of u'r life like others haven't. i do envy u'r prosperity.
