I have a 1996 Grand Caravan and about six months ago I was driving and the tranny gave out. It never slipped or gave me problems at all then just went into neutral. I left it there overnight and returned the next day. I tried to move it for the heck of it and it drove about 20 yards and did it again. It will go in reverse with no problems and still will drive forward if u do not go over 5 mph. I have discussed with with several garages and they tell me that it needs replaced. On a poor budget I cannot replace it for 1400.00. I have some mechanical background and don't believe that a tranny could just go like this one did. Anyone with knowledge about this please reply with possible solutions. Thank you!

I am still seeking further information about my caravan with transmission trouble. Does anybody have a possible simple solution?

Hey Murph, I don't have a solution (Actually I'm seeking a solution to the same problem) but I can fill in what I've learned so that hopefully someone can sudjest something more precise.

I have a 95 Voyager Sport, Electronic Trans with overdrive. This tranny has been rebuilt by a tranny specialist. They're very strong on Tranny mechanics but not so hot on the new electronics. (more about this later).

The simptom will appear after I've played with the wireing harness to the tranny to repair the protection around it or when I flushed the rad and radiator fluid soaked the wiring harness, near the plugs at the tranny end. The simptom has reappeared lately after a major downpour or high humidity (like this morning's melting snow).

I've attempted to dry it out to get going but it refuses to co-operate until the next day when all is fine (as if there was never a problem).

What I have been able to deturmine is that the tranny will go into 1st gear when I select Drive. As I accelerate, the tranny goes to 2nd gear but ends up in neutral instead. From this point on, I have no forward gears at all until I shut down the engin, restart it and I have 1st gear only again.

The tranny experts have checked out the tranny and say that's not the problem. They have swapped out the solinoid pack so that's not it either. They have hooked up their computor to the tranny computor but the computor reports no problems. (And of course, the simptoms refuse to present themselves to the specialists)

This fault is so nasty because the experts that hold the warrenty can't help me. Replacing the harness and maybe the computor with new is out of the question, with a used is going to be an awful lot of work and if knowone has experience with this, it looks like I'll have to take it to the Dealership to figure it out.

Thank to those who have responded! I might try the wiring thing stated above and see if that is even my problem. I hope it will be something on those lines because to replace these things costs so much. Anyway I'll report if I find that my problem is with the wires!

It's a long shot, but check continuity of the input and output speed sensors if your trans has them both. I sort of had somewhat similar symptons and a new output sensor did the trick (along with large amounts of prayer). The defective sensor read zero across the pins. These are easy to get at. 10 minutes max to change one out. They cost about $35 each or less.

Call me a dummy but where are the speed sensors that you speak of. Are they something I can tested at Advance Auto? Thank you!

Thank you!I also have a '96 Caravan, a Grand Caravan LE, in fact - ALL the bells and whistles (although only half of them are operable at the moment). Welcome to Caravan Torque Converter Hell. It is your OBLIGATION to replace your "transmission" every 65,000 miles or 4 years, whichever comes first. There is NO long term solution. Due to POOR engineering, you are screwed, just as I and, no doubt, most of our fellow posters are screwed.

Including the "transmission" that came with my Caravan, I'm on my THIRD. Be still my heart.

But hey, let's count ourselves lucky. At least we haven't had the opportunity to test our defective airbags in a head-on collision (if not fixed by recall) or burn up in a fuel explosion because of gas tank or fuel rail fires burning up our rides (if not fixed by recall).

We are blessed. Dodge could have killed us three different times for three different reasons over the span of 5 or so years and they failed.

Woo hoo!... Welcome to the Machine... Or buy a Toyota.
