Only thing I know of is the Fuel Cutoff switch. It should be labeled in your car in the trunk (mine is and I have a 94) Good luck. Should be able to push a button and have it start up. I hope this helps.

On the intake manifold there is a valve like a bicycle tire valve. With the ignition turned on, push a key or small screwdriver against the valve to see if there's any pressure. If nothing, your fuel pump is hooped. Another thing you can check is whether you can actually hear the pump when the ignition is turned on. Listen under the rear seat.

Check that the injector itself is not stuck shut. Take it out, put it upside down, and put a little bit of carb/injector cleaner in it. It'll work again. While it's out, kick the ignition on. If fuel comes out, then your pump and lines are ok. If nothing comes out, try again. If nothing comes out the second time, then your pump is dead, not getting power, or your lines are plugged. Also, check for power to the injector. Take the light out of the top clock/cluster, bend the leads out (they can be bent back when you're finished) and stick them in the injector plug on the car. Try the key, and crank the engine. It'd be good to disconnect the fuel pump at this point, assuming it's pumping gas. If your light gives off a dim light, then the power to your injector is good.

My son drives a 1990 Ford Escort. It is having problems. The fuel pump, fuel filter, and fuel pump relay have been replaced. Sometimes the car will start and run perfectly, then another time it won't start and the fuel pump runs continuously. One time it even started smoking really bad and smelled really bad too. Don't know what to try next.

Where's it smoking from?

If the fuel pump runs continuously, then your fuel pressure regulator is stuck open to loop fuel back to the tank, thus your car not starting, or else your injector is stuck open, and fuel is being dumped into your engine, flooding it out, which would explain it smoking badly once started.
