when i drive my 92 civic si, from about 15mph i get a noise which is something like vumvumvumvum.....i took it to a suspension shop and they said it was my front wheel hub bearing...i changed it....its not that....its not the tires....i changed them.....i think it is the dummy shaft....can anyone confirm if they have had any trouble with their dummy shaft? (the bit between the gearbox and the passenger side driveshaft...it def sounds like a bearing but i dont know. oh and its not the drive shafts, cos i replaced them too

edit: there is no shaft that's between the tranny and PS driveshaft. the axle goes from the tranny right to the wheel hub. same w/ the DS, unless u added an intermediate shaft, and changed the DS shaft to fit.

i think u'r gonna have to be a little more specific in describing u'r problem and the parts u'r referring to.

this person could be from a differnt country and have a right hand drive si with a stock b16, but its unlikely. i am going to have to agree with honda_luvr and say that there is a definite need for more info on this one...

i live in aus so its right hand drive. on my si there is a dummy shaft which is bolted on the engine which the ps driveshaft goes into...its just like a extention of the drive shaft. its not that anyay cos i changed it and it still makes the noise....by the way its a d16a engine. if u still need more info just tell me

AAHHHHHH makes so much more sense now. yeah over here in the US we can have those too, but they'd be on our driver's side. that's y i was confused. so anyway, hmm. is it like a rubbing noise? have u tried revving the engine up from under the hood, or even inside the car in neutral/park? does it sound likes it's going the speed of the engine or the speed of the wheels? how do the brakes re-act when u'r slowing down? does it seem to come from one side or the other? that's about all the q's i think of at the moment, but they should help narrow it down.

definatly when the tires are speeding up....it seems to come from one side then the other...i dunno...like in the middle.....also if i steer a little bit to the right it goes away but when it goes straight its comes back....and its mainly in cornering

alright well since u r actaully checkin up on u'r thread, unlike sum other people do, i'm gonna try to step u thru sum tests to see if we can get closer to the cause.

first one, real simple; i know u said u replaced the hub wheel bearings but who knows. don't loosen the lug nuts. jack up the side u think u hear it more from first. just get the wheel off the ground. take one hand and grab the top of the wheel, and w/ the other grab the bottom. try shaking the wheel back and forth, like pulling out on the top while pushing in on the bottom, and vise versa rapidly. if u have play, then it is the wheel bearings. then repeat the process on the other side.

second one; w/ the wheel still off the ground, try spinning it a little fast. so yeah neutral would be a good idea. see if u hear anything then.

third; easy also, unless u'r 8ft 400lbs, which i doubt since u'r driving a civic. slide under the car and check out the inner and outer CV boots. they r on either end of u'r drive axles. most likely it will be the outer boots right behind the wheel hub. look for cracks, splits, tears, leaks, wetness, or crap on the back-inside of u'r wheels. u'll know wut i mean by crap if u see it, not brake dust but almost gunk. if u see any of that w/ the boots, replace the whole axle and boots together. not too expensive, and the parts store should have a core charge u'll get back when u return u'r bad axles.
