98 honda civic valve lash

okay heres my problem. i tried to do a valve lash adjustment on my 1.6 litre honda today. It was loud before i started but now it is 10 times as loud. I used for intake .009-.011 inch and for exhaust .011-.013 which was specified in my book. The only thing that i wast sure about was which valves were intake and which were exhaust. The way i did it was looking straight at the engine i took the valves above the camshaft as intake and the one below as exhaust. Is this right >??? okay now heres how i did my adjustments. i started with the first cylinder and checked the two top valves and ended up adjusting them with the .010 inch gauge. i then double checked the 2 top valves and the .009 fit and the .010 did not. Is this right??? i then did the same for the 2 exhaust valves for the first cylinder. Am i supposed to do all the valves for each cylinder or just the valves over top of the cylinder?? what i mean is for each cylinder do i adjust 4 valves or 16 valves??? cause my car is soo loud now that it just sounds like a piece of crap. Please someone help me.

i also added a 2.25 inch exhaust straight from the down pipe from the engine. I took out the resonator as well. I also added a K&N filter. would this make any difference in the valve lash adjustment measurements like would the .009-.010 change?????

well for starters, if you dont know which side your intake valves are on and which your exhaust are on, you probably shouldnt be touching them to begin with. but its good to know that they are all gapped the same, the intake valves are on the side of the motor that the intake manifold is bolted onto+ the firewall side of the engine bay. the exhaust valves are next to where your exhaust headers are, and the front of the car. how much did you have do adjust youre little rocker arm gaps? were they all asically all a perfect fit to begin with? and upgrading all youre piping and getting rid of the resonator will as more HP than headers, but expect to lose some serious torque, and yes it will make youre car louder. if the increase in noise coming out youre exhaust or youre engine? if you have a cheap muffler then of course its gonna sound like rice when you add more air to the mix. my last car sounded like a pack of bumble bee's was coming down the street, it was my super-ricemobile, quality exhaust is the key to not acquiring an annoying exhaust.

um dude, u have absolutely no idea wut u'r doing. :disappoin take it to a shop and have it done correctly. wait, better yet, TOW it to the shop.
exhaust system and intake filter would have nothing to do w/ valve adjustments, and it's not valve lash, but valve clearance.
anyway, no u don't do them all at the same time, put each cylinder at TDC and adjust just that cylinder's valves.

Valve lash is the same as Valve clearance just different names. I would say valve clearance is the correct terminology but valve lash is what most people know it by. Anyways to actually help the kid up top. Did you follow manuals instructions for adjusting or did you just read how to adjust the valves. And Yes honda_luvr_2000 was correct.. piston must be at TDC when then feeler gauges you are hopefully using will be measuring at the heel (base circle) of the cam lobe between lobe and follower (in this case rocker arm itself). Obviously make sure adjusting screw locknuts are tight after adjusting. You know your at TDC when both rockers are loose.

well i found out last nite that the chiltons book i bought gave me the wrong clearence it was supposed to be .007-.009 for the intake and .009-.011 for the exhaust. It made a little bit of difference but it is still very loud. And yes i did put all the cylinders at TDC before i started working on the valves. Is there any thing else i can do to get rid of that ticking sound?? my buddy has a 94 civic cx with almost the same exhaust and his engine runs smooth and quiet mine sounds like a diesel.

actually i do believe u'r measuring the valve clearance of the vavle stem to the adjusting screw on the rocker arm, not the cam lobe to rocker arm. if u even slightly nik the cam lobe or the rocker arm end that follows the cam, u will eventually lose that lobe.

edit:
if it sounds like a diesel, then it prolly isn't the valves. thats actually a sign of pre-ignition or even detonation. check out u'r timing. but since u said it got worse when u tried to adjust them, then i'd say it is a valve issue, and u should really get it to a shop and have it fixed by a pro. hey $200 tops to have it fixed, or $700 to replace the motor, u'r call.
