1995 Passat Auto w/Transmission Fluid in Coolant ???Matimus 12-01-2004, 06:20 PM Any words of wisdom or past experiences ..... good or bad? The transmission started slipping a few days ago and I found the transmission fluid low. (I do not know how low, because I can't seem to get the fluid level up to the full mark!) As I have been adding Transmission Fluid I have been getting rusty wet puddles under the car. It turns out the coolant level is beyond full capacity and is overflowing. I suspect the transmission fluid is getting pressurized into the cooling system. How bad can it get? I once was told to cheer up for things could be worse. So I cheered up! Sure enough, things got worse! Thanx, Ed boschmann 12-02-2004, 10:53 PM It will be even worse if any coolant has gotten into the transmission. Matimus 12-07-2004, 05:52 PM $763 later and a new Transmission Cooler, Transmission Flush + the goodies, and a double coolant flush, everything seems to be back to normal. I don't know which was worse: The cooler @ $195, 4L of ATF @ $60, or the X-Mission Filter at $75! Actually, the wait for 3 days for parts was the worst! dingosis 07-08-2005, 04:31 PM $763 later and a new Transmission Cooler, Transmission Flush + the goodies, and a double coolant flush, everything seems to be back to normal. If so, how so? I recently had my 94 start slipping a liittle and making a little whining noise when shifting from 3rd to 4th. I checked my fluid and found it low. I added a little less than 2 qts. About 20 min. later while driving home, the 4 connector water hose from the tranny cooler sprung a leak at the cooler connection. I put a new hose on and refilled the coolant. Started the car and now the coolant looks like a milkshake. I have Ebahn cd rom manual on my computer. As I researched how to ID my tranny, I discovered that my cooler matches the one pictured for the 01M tranny but my tranny is the 096 with the dipstick. Have any wisdom you could share to guide me as I try to save my Vdub? Matimus 07-09-2005, 09:50 AM Don't drive it until you replace the cooler. I had mine serviced within 20 miles of noticing the first slip. Otherwise, you run the risk of a total tranny rebuild @ MegaBuck$ !!! The transmission cooler has sprung a leak inside as the transmission fluid is at higher pressure than the coolant. Good Luck. dingosis 07-09-2005, 03:46 PM Don't drive it until you replace the cooler. I had mine serviced within 20 miles of noticing the first slip.
