Temperature gauge

Temperature gauge … was working fine until yesterday.
My car is mk2 golf diesel 1990 200,000 miles. (Needs to be replaced I know but must hang on a bit longer) After a mad dash to work the temp gauge started to drop off to a much cooler temp. Have replaced temp sender nil fix. The voltage at the sensor is 10 volts is this correct or is my voltage stabilizer up the spout? If it is this where is it mounted? I guess if the stabilizer is ok … It has to be the gauge

If you put off your repair like I do sometimes you might still need this info.
I just replaced mine. As I recall that is the proper reading for the stabilizer but I could be wrong on that point.
My rabbit is much older (79 Diesel) but I'm pretty sure that the volt stabilizer is in the same place, if so, you will find the little sucker attached to the printed circuit mounted to the back of the instrument cluster.

Are you sure it's not a stuck open thermstat? The engine may not be getting up to operating temp, check it with a infrared temp gun.
