tune-up help.

the last time i did a tune-up was on a fiat lancia. i still have the timing light and tachometer. i have the service manual for my 96 accord and i think i have finally located the tachometer port and the port for the tester underneath the dash on the drivers side. if the tester is needed to adjust the timing, where do i get one besides the dealer? also, the manual shows a loop of wire attatched to the tachometer port. is this a plane bare wire that allows you to connect the tach? I really want to learn how to tune up my 96 accords lx/ex correctly. even the hayes manual leaves out a few details that a novice like me would really appreciate. your help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

I Think I Can Help. Ive Done This Before. Ive Also Used A Haynes Manual And It Doesnt Help In This. I Got Help From A Mechanic Freind Of Mine. About The Tach Does Your Car Have One ??? If It Does Just Make Sure Its At The Right Idle.then Take A Dummy Wire And Hook Up The Two Pin Connector (near The Ecu) Putting One End In One Side And One In The Other. This Will Elminate The Ecu From Wanting To Change The Timing Its Self. The Ecu Will Adjust The Timing Its Self If The Two Pin Connector Is Not Connected. Aslo You Will Have To Pull Out The 7.5 Fuse(under Hood Fuse Box) If You Read The Pages About Troobleshooting In The Haynes You'll See What Im Talking About. From There All You Do Is Hook Up Your Timing Light And Adjust The Dist. It Has Three Screws On It That Need To Be Loosend (dont Take Them Out). Then Just Tighten Back And Your Done With Timing. Thats All I Have

yeah, just follow what 96hondaviagra is saying. and the function of the jumper wire is to bypass the computer (limp mode) so that you can set your engine ignition base timing.

thanks, i'll try that. i wasn't aware that you have to remove the 7.5 amp fuse to adjust the timing. i suppose this disengages the computer and compensates for timing changes. makes sense! i tried this without pulling the fuse and i couldn't understand why i wasn't seeing any changes. i'll let you know.
