kinda morbid but i'll check it out anyway

Well, the principle is Darwins theory of evolution, survival of the fittest. An extension in this case, that the least fit actually manage to kill themselves off.

The Darwin awards are given to people who manage to remove their genes from the collective pool in ingeniously stupid ways ;)
