I have a 1983 4x4 S-10 Blazer with a bad engine and a 1987 4x4 S-10 Blazer with a bad transmission. I want to put the 83 trans. into the 87. I have been told that the 83 will bolt up but the torque converter will not lockup and the check engine light might stay on. I suppose that I could put a manual switch for the converter lockup but I do not know if the engine electronics/computer will be adversely affected. Any comments or advice would be appreciated.

That could be a bad thing or a good thing. What happens when he comes to a stop and has to pull out again?

You just need the matching torque converter. Your existing torque converter should be fine.

Thanks for the 3 replies to date to my question about using a 1983 700R4 in a my 1987 Blazer. I have a question regarding the posting by RLITH who stated 'You just need the matching torque converter. Your existing torque converter should be fine." Actually, I am not sure that my existing converter is any good. It is still in the vehicle but I heard some unhealthy noises coming from there before it quit entirely. If it is bad, how do I match another one to my transmission? Will just any converter work?

Simply just cross ref the transmission # (the code should be on the sticker on the tranny or you can use the casting number) to match the torque converter from who ever you buy it from.
