It is typical for an MR2 to crack the EGR or warp the exhaust manifold.

If the EGR is cracked, you will see black soot near the valve cover on that side of the engine.

If your exhaust manifold is warped you would here the ticking coming from the turbo side of the engine.

It would almost be unheard of that you actually crackes the manifold.

My MR2 does the EXACT same thing. Me and my buds deciphered its the compressor or turbine wheel hitting the housing... Thus the excuse im using to buy my CT27

if it were hitting it would whine and that would happen if you had alot of play on the shaft. and you could see if the housing was beaing scrapped. and the wheel would be damaged too.

just listen carefully to hear where the noise is coming from. if it goes away after 3-4 minutes of driving its a part thjat changes size do to heat. if you had forged pistons that could be it. but the symtons sound like worn shims that get tight after heating up. especially if the ticking is coming from uptop. exhaust leaks sound are not as sharp and they leave suit marks so look for them
