My Dad Is Crazy!!!!Hit_N_Run-player 11-21-2004, 03:08 AM Ok, so here i am having the usual nightly talk about cars with my dad who is a mechanic and is crazy smart and wierd. So i bring up the idea of swaping a sr20det but tell him that it doesnt pass emissions and everyting and isnt street legel. He ask's why not and says that i should get it and just change all the pumps back to the usdm and everthing so they wouldnt tell the difference and put a couple of things on the sr from the ka and he said they it probably will pass visual without a problem. If this was coming from my mom or something i would just be like yeah whatever, but my dad is a mechanic and i feel that i should consider his opinion. SO my question is, can you really do this to pass DEQ for the visual part of the inspection?? TatII 11-21-2004, 03:36 AM no becasue the SR looks nothing like a KA. 1st, the engine's length is aroud 6 inches shorter. 2nd, the heads on a SR is hugh compared to a KA 3rd, the KA has a distributer on the side, while the SR uses coil on plug style ignition systems. 4th, the mechanical fan is off center compared to the KA's on center fan. 5th, the intake manifolds looks nothing like the one on the KA. the SR's plenium is on top, the KA's plenium is on bottom ( unless its a single cam ) Hit_N_Run-player 11-21-2004, 12:24 PM hmmm, that kinda sucks. What is the plenium though? TatII 11-21-2004, 01:09 PM thats the main part of the intake manifold where the throttle body is. its usually a log shape. that is the beinging part of the runners. R.W.240 11-21-2004, 02:03 PM The Flat Top Pleums roll under just like the KAs. Im sure if you made the swap look OEM enough you could get them thinking about it... but then they would probably start checking all the faked pumps and stuff. AWDSR20 11-21-2004, 03:19 PM sr has TURBO...ka dznt. >>>>>> wtf, uless u keep it n/a i don't think so GT500916 11-21-2004, 03:56 PM no becasue the SR looks nothing like a KA. 5th, the intake manifolds looks nothing like the one on the KA. the SR's plenium is on top, the KA's plenium is on bottom ( unless its a single cam ) it doesnt matter if it looks nothing like the KA, as long as it looks like an engine it will pass visually, most of the guy who do the smog stuff wont be able to tell a difference, i mean there is not that many 240s out there in the first place, second , they are not gonna go all... "ohh its a red top cant pass it sorry" if you do this go to the cheap places where people dont really care, or do one place and if you dont pass visually then go to another place... the visual part is not your main concern. i say if you can make the SR pass smog then go for it!! there are always ways around visuals. KenOhki2112 11-21-2004, 05:00 PM sr has TURBO...ka dznt. >>>>>> wtf, uless u keep it n/a i don't think so Hiding an SR isn't the hard part, hiding the turbo is. Smog stations know what a turbo looks like, and their little sheet they print out will clearly indicate that your car did not come with a factory turbo option. Thats when you will fail. Hit_N_Run-player 11-21-2004, 06:01 PM i think it would probably better for me to just go find a salvaged KA with low miles and turbo that, then drop it in after i smog the high mileage original one.... Pavlo 11-21-2004, 06:11 PM Somebody should make a conversion kit that includes ka valve cover to fit sr, dummy distributer, a nice turbo heatshield that hides the turbo and makes an impression of a headers heatshield. And if you do try doing the swap i would somehow erase the intercooler tubo sign on the sr and paint the valve cover so that it is no flashy and does not show off the details, put all the heatshields on and/or give the inspector a few hundred dollars :) -ExCesS- 11-21-2004, 06:18 PM hmm why are the valve covers on the SR so much bigger than the DOHC covers on KA. . .i read about it somewhere before but cant find it n e more Pavlo 11-21-2004, 06:42 PM I think because sr has rocker arms, so the head is wider. I am not sure though... drumpet15 11-21-2004, 11:04 PM Somebody should make a conversion kit that includes ka valve cover to fit sr, dummy distributer, a nice turbo heatshield that hides the turbo and makes an impression of a headers heatshield. And if you do try doing the swap i would somehow erase the intercooler tubo sign on the sr and paint the valve cover so that it is no flashy and does not show off the details, put all the heatshields on and/or give the inspector a few hundred dollars :) Oh, man! That'd be soo sweet! I wish the US laws weren't so jacked up. How did it get to this point anyway? jeez... SHO411 11-23-2004, 10:53 AM Register your car with your out of state Grandmother (Family), change the title to there name, and you will be required to pass inspection of the State the car is registered in, or you can rebuild and boost the KA, and you can also go way out to the boon docks where all the cars are junkies and go do your visual there. If all else doesnt apeal to you, slip the inspector some $$$$$ under the table, if you are broke, then you could go under the table for him........................ Which ever suits you best. drumpet15 11-23-2004, 01:28 PM That's kinda grossin' me out... D-Bo 11-23-2004, 02:22 PM man i'm glad we don't have to go through visual inspection.. but i guess the tradeoff is that our emissions standards are ridiculous.. Silvia_Scoundrel 11-23-2004, 03:27 PM You can pass because I pass all my emissions and I have an SR Redtop. I just go to a cheap place that has a lot of mexicans that dont know a lot about cars. Hit_N_Run-player 11-24-2004, 01:12 PM hmmm, i need to find one of those places!!! ALso, how much would be a good amount to slip the guy, at DEQ i thought they worked for the government and were all like "this is how it is sir, are you trying to bribe me to pass your car" and call the cops for it or something. Are there many places that do the emissions and visuals? cuz i only know of one around here and they are in the same building as the DMV.. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
