Damaged pistonsber81 11-19-2004, 01:44 PM I have a 93 delSol VTEC (b16a2) with a JRSC supercharger fitted on it. It has the 6 PSI pulley. The car has about 60.000 miles on it and about 4000miles with the supercharger on it. It has always received proper maintenance. Just recently i had a fluttering noise in the exhaust and a smoking pcv hose (exhaustgasses) and a misfire. After a compression test the first cilinder was doing nothing and with oil a little bit. After pulling the head and removing the pistons i found out that on the intake side off the piston between the compression rings there was a piece broken off bit still in place. In the other pistons there were cracks on the intakeside too. The engine hasn`t overheated and runs rich when under boost according to the air/fuel meter. The ignition timing is changed according too the JR manual. It didn`t suffer from detonation either and the local honda dealer hasn`t got a clue what it could have been. Does anyone here know what went wrong? superbluecivicsi 11-20-2004, 05:08 AM Sucks :crying: you said that there is no detonation? [whispers] unless you have water/alky injection or hondata, your jrsc will always have detonation [whispers] yes, even at 6psi. ive had detonation for the past four years running @ 6psi Your A/F gauge is useless, so throw it or go sell it to someone who wants a light show in their car and get an egt gauge so you have something useful. your JR FMU naturally runs rich. Bad gas, bad oil, improper timing after installing jrsc (are you on any JR band aids? Hows the wiring?) You should of been fine if you followed the install correctly. there shouldnt be any problems @ 6 psi............but, boost is boost. How was the motor before the jrsc? ber81 11-20-2004, 07:41 AM The car was imported from Germany two years ago. I know that the mileage is correct but don`t know much about the history of the car but the engine is very clean from the inside. They also used original Honda parts. But when i bought the car the thermostate didn`t open. Maybe that could have done some damage. I changed it rightaway. I also had to put in a new ignition because the old one died on me. Right before it died it detonated like crazy for a very short period of time. I ordered one from the local honda dealer and set the timing right. After the new ignition about 1,5 years ago it felt like it didn`t accelerate so hard like the first half year but only a bit. The parts where OEM and ordered by VIN number. Maybe i was getting used to the speed or the compression wasn`t very good then and there. Sometimes it wouldn`t start right away when hot. When cold the rpm dropped to like 400 RPM and fluctuated a few seconds and then it went to 1200 and was stabile . I checked the IAC valve and corrected it then it got better but not real good. Beside this it ran perfectly. This was all before the installation of the supercharger. The gas at our pump is 95 octane. I will check everything again and if everything is alright i could asume that it was already slightly damaged prior to install. Maybe i should go for the Hondata upgrade. superbluecivicsi 11-20-2004, 02:35 PM Definately get the hondata. The difference was like night and day. thats because i was running really rich. you will love the jrsc more after the hondata. YOUNGSTER 11-20-2004, 08:08 PM definately go with hondata i love it. and go with a egt and wideband civickiller 11-22-2004, 04:08 AM your motor probably detonated from ignition timing causing hte ring lands to break resulting in your damaged pistons. could have been from running lean is that ever happened ber81 11-22-2004, 03:27 PM The fuelfilter is new and according to the A/f meter it was rich under boost but i guess that a A/f meter isn`t that accurate. I checked al the wiring and the vacuumhoses and cooland hoses and they were al installed correctly. I heard on another forum that the fuel regulator from jackson racing can be adjusted but i think that it`s set to a factory standard. It was something with a plug on top of the regulator but I am sure that i should not be fiddling with those things. The ignition timing was set to 10 degrees BTDC witch our bosch tester. But come to think of it we had a fairly hot summer in the Netherlands and i didn`t put in a colder sparkplug. That could have done it When i finish rebuilding the engine i`m going to order the Hondata and then i guess that it wil al be good. I just needed some pointers to see what my error was or good be. This is my first boosted car and there aren`t any supercharged cars in my neighbourhood. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2010, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
