the manual trans 540i's were all 6-speed I remember, the 34 M5's were quick, the 6-speed 540's are absolutely awesome to drive for such a large car. HP?, don't recall......seat of the pants works well for me.

actually, a couple guys over at the m3 forum told me that the 6 speed transmission was an option on the e34 540i later on in that model yr. the e34 m5 got the 6 speed at the end of the model yr, which the states never got, unless it was a gray import, or if it was swapped in. hp is about 282 for the v8 540i engine, and 315 for the inline 6 m5 engine. the 540i is about as quick as the m5 version to 60, but after that the m5 pulls away.
