Ford 4.2 truck motor in a 280zTach_it 11-18-2004, 11:32 PM I have the ability to do a swap that doesnt require too much alterations. Question would it be difficult to put a 2000 F 150 4.2 v6 in any year 280z manual, could the z tranny be used or would i need to fit a domestic tranny in? What domestic trannies would fit? I have seen chevy V8s in z cars before. need help with V6, on slim budget, thanks if any can help BlackBettyZ 11-18-2004, 11:38 PM NOOOOOOOOO!!!!! Dont put that american crap into a Z, NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Zgringo 11-18-2004, 11:52 PM I suggest you go here for help. http://hybridz.org/phpbb2/ But if your really into doing a swap you might try this one. http://www.zparts.com/showcase/engines/pages/q45v8z-testfit.html BlackBettyZ 11-18-2004, 11:54 PM Broke_as_**** 11-19-2004, 12:03 AM american crap Nice wording. Anyway, if you are going to do a custom swap, and this would be a custom swap in the meaning you are going to be fabricating alot of stuff, then you might as well at least get a performance engine. 350 chevies are a good choice because they have put into everything from lawnmowers to time machines so there is probably a kit sitting around for this application and they can be picked up for cheap from just about everywhere. That and they have aftermarket support that out flows even the uber huge "Stupid body kit for a stock ass Civic" market. As for the details, well, thats just up to research. You'd be surprised with the different combos of engine and transmission you can make with a modified bell housing, so if you can find a transmission to suit your needs, chances are you can make it work. However, if you can fit the stock trans for whatever engine you go with under the car, the easy route would just be to have a custom drive shaft made up with the appropriate links on each end, welding and bolting as needed. You'll find that there are a few members around here that have their heads firmly lodged in their fourth point of contact about V8s, so don't expect a very balanced response. Zgringo 11-19-2004, 12:30 AM Broke couldn't have said it better myself. But he's talking about a V6, still why would anyone want to takeaway from the performance of a car is beyond me. If you really want to do a swap do it with something that well enhance it power and handling performance. k3smostwanted 11-19-2004, 12:56 AM yeah i agree...if your going to spend the time and money, swap something with results. 4.2L v6 ford isnt much of a step up from what comes stock. atleast do a lt1 or something. options are endless when it comes to that kind of thing. k3smostwanted 11-19-2004, 12:58 AM yeah i agree...if your going to spend the time and money, swap something with results. 4.2L v6 ford isnt much of a step up from what comes stock. atleast do a lt1 or something. options are endless when it comes to that kind of thing. i acutally wouldnt midn seeing a ls1 in that bad boy. :evillol: Tach_it 11-23-2004, 08:35 PM My problem is I dont have much money now, but I see what you guys are saying, I appreciate it. If I were to get junked 350 chevy or any other motor, would it be too costly to fabricate all the parts? could I use a stand alone ecu? or u talked of a kit any other links you know would be great. thanks sorry it took me so long to get back and detroit motors aint crap ;) Zgringo 11-23-2004, 09:38 PM My problem is I dont have much money now, but I see what you guys are saying, I appreciate it. Its really very easy. Put the engine and tranny in place where it goes and measure for what you need. Detroit motors are great, but generally heavy, and lower in RPM than the imports. Try to find something that well fit, is lighter, puts out or could be made to put out more power than what you have, and is in your price range. I'll give you a couple examples of what I mean A VK56DE is about 75lbs lighter than your engine, and puts out 305HP an 379ft.lbs torque. In a 5019 lb. truck turns 0-60 @ 5.6 seconds and the 1/4 in 15.3@90.4. Now in a car weighing 3,000 lbs the 1/4 well be 12.82@105. Now that's pretty good for not even doing anything to the motor. One step beyond. A VK45DE engine installed the same way and your have a 12.36@108.9 car with 100lbs less weight on the front end. You could run both of these in your car till you had enough money you beef up and still have a pretty good ass kicker. Do your home work and see what you can come up with and plan and ask questions then go for it. WildsideCreations 08-09-2005, 08:15 PM Wow. Very interesting. I own both vehicles. the 4.2L V6 is no slouch. I have a 99 F150 with it and I have it running low 17's in the 1/4 with the slushbox. NOW WAIT! I know that sounds slow but go look at the truck forums for that truck, not bad. Anyway I have cold air tube on it and dual straight pipes, no mufflers, just high flow cats. People are always thinking its a V8 by the way it sounds. Some 5.4L drivers have drivin it and say that it is has more pep than theres. But you loose the low end tourqe. Also, remeber the 4.2L is the same block as the 3.8 that they put in the mustangs. Now about the Z. I have both a 280 and a 260. I am putting a 350 in the 260 but your idea to use the 4.2 is ... well... advantageuoes. If your donnor truck is complete and running, I would say yank the motor and trans and swap as a whole. Heres the reason, if you do you can go ahead and keep the ECU and all the wiring harness, just add gauges. Hell you could even go so far as to retrofit the F150 cluster in the z :) that would be cool. Anyways, by keeping the engine, trans, and ecu all intact you can use a chip upgrade and modify the shift points. Sounds like a cool swap to me. :o BTW, the 4.2 puts out around 220HP stock right? 350 puts out around 280-300 stock. and the 5.4L puts out around 240HP stock. ummph. Have Fun :) DeleriousZ 08-09-2005, 08:30 PM dude check the dates on the thread... this one is an oldie! i haven't seen the starter of the thread around.. well... since this thread as far as i can remember... anyway.. just check the dates next time you find something on the 1x'th page WildsideCreations 08-10-2005, 01:06 AM no :( Coupons420 08-10-2005, 11:16 AM Lol Thats Classic ZedEx 08-10-2005, 12:07 PM Yea...
