A friend of mine (really) has a problem starting his F-250 carbureted 460 engine, sounds like it is a fuel problem because after cranking it for a while, he is finally been able to start it. He looked at the block trying to find the fuel pump but fails to find it. Is it behind the engine? I guess that fuel ejected engine has low and high pressure pumps, but I am not sure if carbureted has electrical pump or mechanical one…. ?

Thanks for all your help.

Electric fuel pump located in the tank.

MANY older carburetted engine have BIG problems with fuel vaporization and boil-over due to the fact the all modern fuels are formulated exclusively for fuel injection. This means that their "reed vapor pressure" is much higher than it was when these vehicles were built, and it raises holy H#LL with carbs. Adding ethanol only makes this worse. He may have better luck if he can find "unblended" fuel.

Paul is of course correct, starting in the mid-eightys Ford switched to a low pressure in-tank electric fuel pump in all applications, carbed or injected. For injected units, they simply added a second high pressure pump on the inner left frame rail.
