89 Civic Trailer Hitch?RookieDRZRider66 11-17-2004, 08:49 PM Hi folks, I'm new to the forum and have a quick question. Have any of you installed a trailer hitch on your Civic? If so, which one do you have, how difficult was it to install and does it work well? I realize the Civic is not a "hauling" vehicle, but I need to trailer my dirt bike. I figure the bike/trailer combination won't weigh more than 500 pounds. Thanks for any information you can give. Woody in College Park, MD DJHyperXK2004 11-17-2004, 09:40 PM I saw one on E-bay a few days ago. I don't know what other people on here would say, but I don’t think are cars were ever really Designed to pull a hitch, so that’s something I would never have my car do. might also depend on how much HP/torque your car is puttin out. might be a strain on our little cars unless you got the power to do it travagliante 11-17-2004, 11:17 PM Hmmm...Id highly reccomend against that. Our cars in no way were made to tow even the littlest of trailers. Thats why its hard to find any tow hitch made for them. If i remember correctly our cars cant pull no more than 900lbs. That would have to include, you, your stuff, gas, 500lb, trailer, big heavy tow hitch, and any other crap in your car.--- I wouldnt even try risking breaking something or burning up brake pads and warping rotors. And if you idid have to do this, Id say def. keep it under 45mph. Plus you will have a serious loss in gas mileage! slammedcivicsi 11-18-2004, 12:50 AM Im getting a hitch to pull my seadoo.....but thats going on my sedan....Ive seen them on DA Tegs before.....Guys used to haul 6-7 bicycles on the trailor. TheSilentChamber 11-18-2004, 02:25 AM If you get one, please please post a picture. It would make my day. Integrity1 11-18-2004, 02:29 AM Id say dont even attempt cuz my muffler scrapes when more than 3 peps in my rex but..... try ebay travagliante 11-18-2004, 11:11 AM turtlecrxsi 11-18-2004, 11:25 AM that prelude is sweet looking. I never realized they made them so long ago. ...as for hitching a civic. I'm pretty sure I've seen them pulling seados or whatever with the boot sagging. Get more hp/tq then think on it... 1PhatCX 11-18-2004, 02:26 PM no, our cars are NOT ment to tow i had a hell of a time towing a volkswagen golf... an OLD SCHOOL one. after that day my clutch was fucked because these cars arent ment to tow at all 4G4D Store 11-18-2004, 10:26 PM ya, but towing a dirt bike (or other bike) is a lot different than towing a car. Onimacus 11-18-2004, 10:28 PM my 86 CRX Si had a tow hitch, you know how well 93 HP can tow Wooooweeee! krustindumm 11-18-2004, 11:39 PM anything can tow if the correct precautions are taken. do a thourough inspection of all components, brakes (flush fluid if more than 2 years old), tranny, engine, suspension, etc. If you have an auto, flush the fluid and put in a temp gague. if a manual, change the fluid and make sure the clutch is adjusted. Drive slower and more carefully, to avoid sudden stops. Also weight the trailer carefully for best performance. Good luck! CivicSiRacer 11-19-2004, 12:03 AM Hidden Hitches makes a Class I trailer hitch, and I know I've seen guys running little Harbor Freight trailers behind their Civics, Miatas and Integras. Realize that a Civic is able to pull a total of 4 people (including the driver). So figure each person is 150-200lbs that's 600-800lbs. icE_x 11-19-2004, 12:12 AM haha ppl with turbo'd civic engines should be able to haul lots of stuff with a trailor hitch :) travagliante 11-19-2004, 12:43 AM Hidden Hitches makes a Class I trailer hitch, and I know I've seen guys running little Harbor Freight trailers behind their Civics, Miatas and Integras. Besides integras 90+ have a lot more hp/tq. than any other civic <91! I still reccomend against it unless your towing it up the street! TheSilentChamber 11-19-2004, 02:58 AM why not just um... you know... ride the bike where you want to take it. incucivic 11-29-2004, 08:40 PM i have a tow hitch on my current 91 DX. i use it to pull my 14 foot aluminum flatboat all the time. it doesnt even strain. its all in the tongue weight, as long as most of the weight is over the axle of the object you are towing, and not on the hitch, youll be fine. i had the same tow hitch on my 90 STD, and i pulled the same flatboat with it no problem. i also towed a CRX Si with a b16a in it, on a UHAUL tow dolly, and although i couldnt go very fast, it made a 90 mile trip without smoking the clutch. then shortly after that i put the b16a into the STD, and the STD motor went into another EF i had with no engine. ill take pictures of the hitch tomorrow and post them up DpSyChO 11-29-2004, 09:19 PM i have a tow hitch on my current 91 DX. i use it to pull my 14 foot aluminum flatboat all the time. it doesnt even strain. its all in the tongue weight, as long as most of the weight is over the axle of the object you are towing, and not on the hitch, youll be fine. Correct on the tongue weight. Its not on my 4g,but I have a hitch on the 99,use it to pull the bike to the beach and drag strip.I know it has a lot more hp than my 90dx hb,but It pulls/stops a 450 lb bike + 300+lb trailer fine . My tongue weight is around 65lb. http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/503/156043Sihitch.jpg CR50HC 11-29-2004, 09:46 PM I have a hitch with ball on my 89 CRX Dx. It's a U-Hau; made hitch. Bolts right up to factory frame bolts. It was put on when the car was new. I can take pics if you'd like. Never pulled more than a jet ski with it when it had the stock d15B2. Never had any problems with it. Since swapping to a DOHC ZC, I haven't towed anything and have considered removing the hitch. E-mail me at spectre574@hotmail.com if you'd like to see pics or whatever. Troy MARKB17 10-08-2006, 08:03 PM I have a hitch with ball on my 89 CRX Dx. It's a U-Hau; made hitch. Do you know what is the towing capacity for 1990 Honda Civic LX? PLease advise...:banghead: MARKB17 mark_so_cal@yahoo.com StockCRXSI 10-08-2006, 11:44 PM Oh wow, nice bump as a first post! lol. I'm going to get a hitch for my CRX to tow my track bike, but I'm on a 2nd gen b16... As far as trying to figure out how much you can haul, look in your manual. My CRX label on the car actually says I can only lug around 700 lbs or something crazy like that. But it's for a d16a6. Or, you can think of...4 persons x 200 lbs a person...something like that. =) Tony 10-09-2006, 12:55 AM LOL, I never even looked at the original dates on this thread until you said something. I don't know the stock towing capacity, I know the cars aren't meant for it, but I'm putting a B18 from a 90 Integra LS in mine and Im planning on putting a hitch on it and getting a tow dolly to haul my 93 Civic coupe and 86 CRX Si race cars, which currently the coupe weighs under 2000, don't know on the crx just yet but should be around 1700. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
