People over 35 should be dead??LXDSMXL 11-15-2004, 10:48 AM I read this article ealier this year it makes lot of sense and even though I'm not 35 or older I could relate to most of this stuff, because I grew up doing most of this: According to today's regulators and bureaucrats, those of us who were kids in the ‘40s, ‘50s, ‘60s, or even maybe the early ‘70s probably shouldn't have survived Our baby cribs were covered with bright colored lead-based paint. We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets . . . and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets. (Not to mention the risks we took hitchhiking.) As children, we would ride in cars with no seatbelts or air bags. Riding in the back of a pickup truck on a warm day was always a special treat. We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle. Horrors! We ate cupcakes, bread and butter, and drank soda pop with sugar in it, but we were never overweight because we were always outside playing. We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle, and no one actually died from this. We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then rode down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem. We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on. No one was able to reach us all day. NO CELL PHONES!!!!! Unthinkable! We did not have Playstations, Nintendo 64, X-Boxes, no video games at all, no 99 channels on cable, video tape movies, surround sound, personal cell phones, personal computers, or Internet chat rooms. We had friends! We went outside and found them. We played dodge ball, and sometimes, the ball would really hurt. We fell out of trees, got cut and broke bones and teeth, and there were no lawsuits from these accidents. They were accidents. No one was to blame but us. Remember accidents? We had fights and punched each other and got black and blue and learned to get over it. We made up games with sticks and tennis balls and ate worms, and although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes, nor did the worms live inside us forever. We rode bikes or walked to a friend's home and knocked on the door, or rang the bell or just walked in and talked to them. Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Some students weren't as smart as others, so they failed a grade and were held back to repeat the same grade. Horrors! Tests were not adjusted for any reason. Our actions were our own. Consequences were expected. The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke a law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law. Imagine that! This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers and problem solvers and inventors, ever. The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas. We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all. And you're one of them! Congratulations! clawhammer 11-15-2004, 10:59 AM Very true. DGB454 11-15-2004, 11:03 AM Good post. Heep 11-15-2004, 11:11 AM I still refuse to wear a stupid bicycle helmet... 240NIZ 11-15-2004, 11:17 AM Man ...this is so true. Jimmiz71 11-15-2004, 11:19 AM although I'm not in that age bracket, I feel people don't know how to enjoy the simple things in life anymore. You cant pull my nephew away from the video games, and god forbid he go for a car ride without gameboy... :twak: -Jimmy crayzayjay 11-15-2004, 11:22 AM I still refuse to wear a stupid bicycle helmet... :1: just looks too stupid dirtydx 11-15-2004, 11:53 AM appearance before health! i had a friend in highschool who hated wearing his helmet. Every time he saw a car coming down the road, he would get off his bike, and hide his helmet. :loser: Heep 11-15-2004, 12:41 PM Around here, they made it law (or so I had heard, still not sure if it actually is) that you have to wear a helmet while on a bicycle. I was around 12 or 13 at this time, and bicycle cops were around everywhere enforcing it/encouraging it. I used to carry a backpack with my helmet in it, and if I saw a cop, I'd hide behind a building or down a side street and put it on until I was in the clear :lol2: SeXy_AnGeL 11-15-2004, 12:55 PM I miss those days and I was born in the 80's...the good ol' days....miss them -Josh- 11-15-2004, 01:22 PM Yeah kids are pussies nowadays, hell i was born in 85 i can relate to some of that. That settles it, my kid is going to be spoiled with homemade games that he has to makeup himself with friends like i had to.... The days of basement dodgeball... Heep 11-15-2004, 01:23 PM The days of basement dodgeball... I made a sort of basement tennis, except with no rackets, net, and with a beach ball globe :D SeXy_AnGeL 11-15-2004, 01:25 PM dodgeball...ahhh i use to LOVE that game...the days when you could ride your bike around the neighborhood with a bunch of kids and ppl didn't call the cops thinking you were "causing trouble" or "disrupting the peace" nialusa 11-15-2004, 01:27 PM Ahhhhhh lead based paint, those where the days. I`m 30 and I still climb trees and still enjoy all the stuff that is now`frowned` upon by all the `do gooders` that have sapped the enjoyment out of life. LotusDreams 11-15-2004, 01:28 PM Not wearing a helmet is illegal here too.. retarded. Good post. -Josh- 11-15-2004, 01:36 PM Yeah, i think my cousin Jeremy and i must have broken at least $200 worth of light bulbs over the years. I'm gonna give my kid the option to wear a helmet, and i'll explain the consequences of what COULD happen if he doesn't, and if he doesn't want to.... good luck kid! Heep 11-15-2004, 01:38 PM Yeah, i think my cousin Jeremy and i must have broken at least $200 worth of light bulbs over the years. Oo, light bulbs..haha forgot about those. Was pillow fighting a friend once in his basement, took a big overhead swing at him, hit the lightbulb, and then smacked the entire shattered bulb into him with the pillow, haha :lol2: crayzayjay 11-15-2004, 01:38 PM I used to carry a backpack with my helmet in it, and if I saw a cop, I'd hide behind a building or down a side street and put it on until I was in the clear :lol2: :lol2: We're not legally obliged to wear a helmet in the UK, but we're not allowed to cycle on the pavement, which i did a lot. I used to run into this cop a couple of times a week on my way to school. He'd see me coming and stand with his arms stretched out like he was going to catch me or something. Stupid fuck. I'd just jump on to the road and fly past :iceslolan Heep 11-15-2004, 01:46 PM :lol2: We're not legally obliged to wear a helmet in the UK, but we're not allowed to cycle on the pavement, which i did a lot. I'd just jump on to the road and fly past :iceslolan Lol yeah we're not allowed cycling on the sidewalk here either but with 14,000 dump trucks driving by I sure as hell wasn't biking on the road! I actually got in a high-speed (?) pursuit with a bicycle cop once...I was biking along without my helmet, on the sidewalk, and he was on the other side of the road going the other direction. He saw me, gave me the stink eye, then proceeded to cross the road and follow me! I ended up clunking my bike into 18th gear and I just took off with him in pursuit - good thing I had a head-start. Went up the road a ways, then ducked into a subdivision, where I jumped through the playground and careened into the bush to hide - he never found me :D Gotti 11-15-2004, 01:54 PM dont forget putting all the sofa cushions on the floor and wrestling... body slamming your friends and shit lol :D I wonder about the mentality of kids growing up in the new age now..... even the cartoons are gay They're missing out on classics like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (i know they have a new one, but its not the same without shredder), Ducktales, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Flintstones, GI Joes, Pink Panther, Tom & Jerry, Thundercats, All-Stars (or whatever, with Michael Jordan, Bo Jackson and Wayne Gretsky) and cant forget C.O.P.S. with detective long arm :D I dont think kids learn as well if they dont try something and fail... you're playing with friends at a park and you jump off something high and break your leg, you dont do it again. You dont sue the city for having unsafe parks or some nonsense like that Heep 11-15-2004, 02:13 PM Inspector Gadget! I dont think kids learn as well if they dont try something and fail... you're playing with friends at a park and you jump off something high and break your leg, you dont do it again. You dont sue the city for having unsafe parks or some nonsense like that Damn right. LXDSMXL 11-15-2004, 03:04 PM Who's Fault You Think It Is??? The Parents, The Kids, Or Just Society Today???? Gotti: Sofa Cushions For Wrestling Lol, I Remember That Savage Messiah 11-15-2004, 03:17 PM Forgot voltron damnit!!! Last year in high school they didn't let us play dodgeball cuz apaprently its illegal, WTF IS THAT SHIT And under 14 you have to have a helmet here -Josh- 11-15-2004, 04:10 PM Ah! Gotti you just gave me a flood of old memories!! And we haven't forgotten about He Man have we?? LXDSMXL 11-15-2004, 05:28 PM how about Tranformers and Thundercats, I also remember playing TAG late night (the whole block) lol crayzayjay 11-15-2004, 05:32 PM I actually got in a high-speed (?) pursuit with a bicycle cop once...I was biking along without my helmet, on the sidewalk, and he was on the other side of the road going the other direction. This thread should be renamed "Bicycle stories of yore" :icon16: I was chased by a bicycle cop too once, for cycling through a non-cycling part of an empty park near my house :disappoin He asked for my name and address, to which i replied with my neighbour's information :lol2: crayzayjay 11-15-2004, 05:37 PM They're missing out on classics like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (i know they have a new one, but its not the same without shredder), No Shredder?  :disappoin Raz_Kaz 11-15-2004, 05:57 PM All I can say is that kid's are way too goddamn spoiled these days. I have 5 bros. 3 of them happene to be in the 11-12 age group and they are in between with the whole stay inside and play games all day to the go out and have fun being a kid. 91300zxtt 11-15-2004, 06:13 PM No Shredder?  :disappoin no, they have shredder, when i heard it was coming back i thought i would watch em again, but they arent the same. its like mega-shredder now or something, so stupid. FairyDust 11-15-2004, 06:34 PM I was born in '80 and hell I never played video games or antyhing as a kid. I was always outside getting hurt too. As far as bicycles go, me and a friend used to ride our bikes in a garbage can all the time just cause we thought it was funny. Something you'd see on jackass. Well one time I flew off my bike and when I landed my knee hit a sharp piece of metal and sliced it open and I scraped it up and stuff too. So I had to get stitches from it. Needless to say I got quite the lecture from my mom too lol. I still do that kind of shit now though, cause its funny lol. I got a friend that was born in 84 and he's one of those that spent most of his time playing video games and stuff and he's such a freakin pussy now. I do play video games now though, the xbox got me! 2of9 11-15-2004, 06:37 PM hey, life in this world aint always perfect...i think they're missin the part about us RACING...illegally...sometimes... FairyDust 11-15-2004, 06:53 PM you forgot about the smurfs  I remember hot and cold too. You'd hide something and then your friends would go around trying to find it and when they'd get close you'd say warm, hot, etc and if they were going farther way, you'd say cold and whatever. And then of course hide and seek, tag, the couch pillow wrestling, GI Joes, thundercat toys, spit wads on bathroom ceilings, ghetto tree houses, rollerblading, etc. Man I miss my childhood. Obviously fromt he games above I grew up with dudes so I never even played with barbies utnil I was like 11 and I met my first girl friend, and then I'd make my guy friends play barbies :lol2: Gotti 11-15-2004, 07:13 PM Ah! Gotti you just gave me a flood of old memories!! Try dusting off your old nintendo (if you still have it) THAT brings back memories :D Mario Bros. 3 Megaman 2 Dungeons and Dragons Batman Ninja Turtles 2 The Arcade Game Bases Loaded Castlevania Captain Skyhawk Tecmo Bowl WWF Wrestlemania Chip N' Dale: Rescue Rangers Contra Skate Or Die 2 Guerilla War Spyhunter Ninja Gaiden Metroid Double Dragon Zelda Mike Tyson's Punchout Some of the best (MOST FUN) games ever made..... cause they concentrated more on gameplay and fun then on graphics then :smokin: Gotti 11-15-2004, 07:21 PM ghetto tree houses LOL i'm surprised i never killed myself on those.... there would be crooked ass wood (any wood that kids got their hands on) Nailed with rusty ass nails leading 20 feet in the air, some were missing usually and you'd have to help yourself with branches. Then when you'd get to the floor, you'd have to twist your body around and pull yourself around and up on to it lol There'd be rusty nails sticking out of the wood everywhere and no walls, no nothing. We pretty much had Tree floors not tree houses haha And it was always funny seeing when other kids didnt want to do it cause they were scared, but the peer pressure would always be too much and they'd go up. Thats how kids conquered fears.... now its like if you're scared dont do it, if it looks dangerous, dont even try it. You're supposed to be a kid and explore the world, not be a little pussy like FairyDusts friend lol :D FairyDust 11-15-2004, 07:43 PM oh man that sounds like our old tree houses lol. I remember this one, it was so freakin ghetto there was no house. Just a bunch of stairs going up lol. And I remember getting my cousin stuck in a tree once. He came from Cali to visit for two weeks and he was extremely spoiled and pamered and really prissy. He was like 10yrs old and never climbed a tree in his life. So me and my friends talked him into trying to climb this one tree and about maybe 5ft off the ground he froze and started crying. We all just about pissed ourselves laughing. My dad had to come and peel him off the tree lol. I was so bad to him while he was here he never came back to visit lol. I think it all builds character though. OMG I LOVED mario!!! I still have a nintendo but it broke recently. So I borrowed a friends for a while, but he got deployed and he took it with him, dunno which I miss more the nintendo or him lol. Damien 11-16-2004, 03:36 PM If it weren't for the fact my dad's family are rednecks, i'd couldn't realte but hell yeah i can now!!! Basement dodgeball...there's some fun! vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
