I hear a slight chattering noise when I apply the brakes on my 2004 Grand Cherokee. The vehicle doesn't pull, the pedal does not vibrate , it does not appear affect drivability of the Jeep. It spent a week at my local 5* dealership and after a long run around they diagnosed the problem as a pebble in the parking brake assembly. Supposedly, there is nothing wrong with the brakes, rotors, pads, calipers, etc... A day later the noise started again. Any help would be appreciated.

All you saps that are still under warranty need to grow a pair and take it BACK to the dealership and tell them what you're posting in here!!! That's what a warranty is for, and this has the potential to be a safety item.

If that dealership can't figure it out, try another one. They are obligated to fix it and make it right.

Thanks for the smart ass comments and the warranty explanation.

Do you have any insight on the brake problem?

It sounds like it could be a simple adjustment they failed to make, my only other thought is it has something to do with the ABS, is your ABS light on or does it blink at all during this chatter noise?

It wasn't meant to be a smart ass comment, I've owned some sort of Jeep vehicle since 1991 and I know first hand that the Jeep dealers I've used will do just about anything in their power not to fix the issue but rather skirt around it, call it "undiagnosable" or likewise unless you are firm with them. Here in Orange County, Tuttle-Click was the worst and you basically had to abandon your car there until they got a hint. One time I took my Wrangler there at night and blocked the service drive with it, took the keys with me. They were unable to move it due to the angle I parked it, and finally called me and said "OK, you win, bring us the keys and we'll figure it out!!"

If the problem is happening on a regular basis, not intermittantly, I'd take the service manager for a ride, let him hear it and go from there. Hopefully they'll be cooperative.

check the ABS Wheel Speed Sensors, they sound loose.

I put a tranny in my friends 3000GT and he lost one fo the bolts for the ABS sensor and now it is loose, and whenever applying the brakes u can hear it chatter it is very annoying and sounds like the cars about to fall apart.

start at the ABS sensors. the chattering u are hearing is deffinately the ABS, but I can't say it is deffinately the sensors or what. but thats a good place to start.

Thank you very much for your replies. I took it to another 5* dealership and they were much better to work with than the original dealership. They said that there was some crystalization on the front rotors which they turned. It took care of 90% of the noise and new pads fixed the rest of the problem.
Thanks again.
