2000 2WD JGC Rear-end noise grinding/scrapingbradorboy 11-07-2004, 11:25 PM I just bought a 2000 JGC Laredo 2WD 6 Cyl. 68K it makes a terrible sounding rear end noise that sounds like some sort of metallic grinding at low speeds around 20 mph approx. If I let off of the accelerator it is still there but most evident when I do accelerate. It seems to minimize the faster I go with engine noise and wind noise covering it up I am sure. But at low speeds it almost sounds like some sort of metal rubbing or something dragging, it is crazy! The dealership was aware of it when I bought it and have agreed to fix it and they had it for a week and said they had to replace some bearing (needed some "special tool" for that) and replaced the rear brakes but it is still there. I have read similar posts on this site with JGC rear end noises but I haven't been able narrow it down to my problem. If I accelerate it is very constant at low speeds especially. If I let off it is less evident but almost as if it metal grinding/scrpaing misses intermittently if I let the vehicle coast at low speeds.....accelerate and it is more painful the fingernails down a chalkboard!! HELP PLEASE!!! Cam7 11-08-2004, 05:57 AM Did you have the Jeep back from the Dealer and does the noise still exhist? The noise you have stated sounds like bad bearings Axle or Pinion or both. bradorboy 11-08-2004, 08:21 AM Cam7 I do have the Jeep back from the dealer and the exact same noise exists. It is really aweful. But the Jeep runs perfect as far as it feels. Everything is great except for the terrible grinding noise from the rear end. It almost sounds like a branch got stuck underneath and is dragging on the road except it is most definitely metallic. I appreciate all you replies. Thnk you! ChadEbert 11-08-2004, 08:40 AM It sounds like the rear end is on its way out. I'd take it to the dealer and since you said the dealer has agreed to fix whatever this noise is, I'd take it back to them and not accept it back from them until it is fixed to your satisfaction. Reading your last post, you picked it up and the noise still is there. Why did you even accept the car back if it wasn't fixed? Run it on back to the dealer and don't sign for it until after its right. bradorboy 11-08-2004, 09:14 AM ChadEbert The dealer jerked me around so much, it is a long story. But I needed the vehicle and had been waiting on it for over a week. They promised me they would fix it and that it was fixed. How much might something like this cost and is it possible to say that the dealer will actually get it right? Thanks ChadEbert 11-08-2004, 09:46 AM If the dealer said they will fix the problem, then they are obligated to follow through on their word and make it right. Take it back, give them one more chance. If it isn't right, shoot a letter to the GM of the dealer, cc the service manager and while you're at it, send a copy to the B.A.R, that'll get their attention. I had a friend jerked around by a Honda dealer here locally and after he did what I just mentioned, they instantly made the car right and have been kissing his ass since. Never be afraid to rough 'em up. bradorboy 11-08-2004, 10:35 AM ChadEbert Thanks for the advice. I just (10 minutes ago) took the Jeep back to the dealer and they promptly provided me with a rental (with my request). They have told me they would fix the vehicle as promised. Keep in mind this is a used car dealer and might not be as easily influenced by the threatening diplomacy route you advised but if I need to I will keep that in mind. Thanks again for the help. They still think it is a bearing problem in the rear axle connecting the rear end. I hope it is and it gets fixed. Does anyone have any war stories that sound similar to my problem? Any advice is greatly appreciated! ChadEbert 11-08-2004, 10:38 AM I wish I could enlighten you with some Jeep horror. In 1998, against the advise of everyone I know, I bought a JGC Limited 5.2 4x4. Nothing ever went wrong with it, for 115,000 miles all I did was routine service. I sold it about a month ago for a new Wrangler Unlimited. Hopefully #2 will be as reliable and nightmare free as #1. bradorboy 11-08-2004, 11:11 AM ChadEbert Thanks again. Hopefully it goes well for you. I had driven another Grand Cherokee for the past 1.5 years too and had no problems. Hopefully everything goes well with this one and that noise gets fixed and I live happily ever after... ChadEbert 11-08-2004, 11:52 AM Yah, good luck, keep me posted on the outcome with this. Will be curious to see what it is that's making the noise and if the dealer lived up to its promise. CME bradorboy 11-10-2004, 01:36 PM Thanks Will post and update after they resolve the problem... bradorboy 11-10-2004, 04:54 PM FYI They fixed it and this was the other bearing on the axle, apparently the are 2 and only 1 was replaced last time. I guess where the axle connects to the actuall rear end. ChadEbert 11-10-2004, 06:34 PM Cool, happy Jeepin'! bradorboy 11-10-2004, 10:23 PM Thanks. You too! fredjacksonsan 11-11-2004, 08:46 AM Brador, glad it's fixed. Hey Chad, what's the B.A.R. that you metioned previously? I've got a maintenance issue I may need to get tough on. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
