1996 GC Rear Brake ProblemJayAby 11-06-2004, 01:02 PM Hey there, I have a 1996 Grand Cherokee Limited V6, There is an extremely loud grinding/graoning noise comming from the rear brakes and it is impossible to creep along without hearing it.(whether at a red light and moving up a few feet, or when offroading down a steep hill) This noise is driving me insane and the dealership I bought it from just says that it is a normal sound. I agree that a noise similar to the mine can be replicated on almost any vehicle but no where near to this extent. Along side this grind/groan is an even bigger problem. After driving around for about 20 minutes and letting the brake heat up, a clunking type noise starts to appear from the rear end after speeding up from a stop or crawl. It goes away after I get to about 20 km/h. It almost sounds like the tires are catching on the molding or like playing cards in spokes because the noise will speed up or slow down relative to the vehicle speed. If this was only a sound I would be lucky, but it actually causes the vehicle to shift each time the whatever is catching...catches. After getting down close to the rear wheels it looks likes the brake are binding cause the wheels wont turn smoothly when the brakes are applied. So... Had new rear brake pads and rotors installed and lubed the caliper pins. Still makes that god awful grind/groan noise, and brake still seem to not want to release (if that is the problem). Another tidbit...I was parked and eating a burger when I felt the entire vehicle shift, kinda like something big falling back into place. Weird, but after this happened the brake noise was gone and they didnt bind up at all. It was like haveing an entirely new vehicle. I was so happy and after driving around town for about 30 minutes it was still gone (never exceeding 50 km/h), but by the time i got home after driving down the highway for about 20 minutes it was back (going about 120 km/h). Hopefully someone has some info here, cause the dealship and my mechanic dont know whats wrong. Thanks guys. dksob81 11-06-2004, 05:25 PM wow this sound slike it could be soo many things, it would be easier to diagnos in person. but possible wheel bearing, have u checked the Ebrake shoes? maybe differentials problem, cheapest thing I would do is start with checking the Ebrake shoes and change fluid in diffentials (remember to add friction modifier if required - trac loc rear axle) JayAby 11-06-2004, 07:38 PM Thanks for the info... Already had my mechanic back the E-Brake Shoes off but it didn't make a difference. Ill go pick up new diff fluid on monday and check into that friction modifier. Ive heard lots of people talk about the master cylinder or brake proportion valves but not too sure if either of those are likely to be the problem. Thanks again. croozer 11-06-2004, 08:00 PM Could be a bad caliper or a collapsed brake hose. If it is a bad caliper, Replace both and the hose. JayAby 11-07-2004, 12:05 PM I think the only thing left to change on the brakes is the calipers and possibly the brake hoses. Im just hoping that its is the brakes and not something major in the drive train or elsewhere. Thanks. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
