HI,
I have a 2000 Elantra 100 Kmiles and here is a list with the troubles that I had since I bought the car, brand new:
-power windows regulators(replaced by dealer)
-spark plug wires, radiator fan(the car was overheating),battery after 2 years.
Other that that,the regular maintenance:timing belt+water pump(60 Kmiles)oil change,air filter,tires,spark plugs,radiator flush,wipers,light bulbs,cv boots(100 kmiles)...
I can't complain about the car.To be honest...I'm happy with it and I'm planning to keep it a long time.
Good luck with yours.

You want to hear about trouble miles!!!!

I have a 2001 Elantra and its name is trouble. The first week I bought the car there was a leak in the front and my floor got soaked. I have replaced the power steering hose 3 times. Headlight lenses both leaked. Had to be replaced. Radiator replaced second year. Transmission replaced second year. High pressure power steering hose (separate from 3 above) has been replaced. I call it my $500 oil change. I took the car in for an oil change, hose wasn't leaking when I took the car to the garage, but was leaking before she came out. Within the first 4 months the power windows and door locks gave out. Had in the garage on 3 different occasions replacing wiring until it was finally fixed. Now on the 3rd year power locks do not work at all. Only 143,000 km yet. Also had to replace timing belt. This is just what I can remember of the top of my head. Do you think I'll be buying another Hyundai???? DON'T THIN SO!!!!

I have 88,000 on my 2000, so far i have replaced the horn, tail lights (bulbs) 10x ! 3 of the 4 door regulators, (the pulley thing used to make the cable move are made of cheap plastic and the arizona sun bakes plastic) back passenger door lock, luckily it has all been cheaper stuff to fix, and nothing that affects how it runs (knock on wood,)

I traded in my 1997 Elantra with 240,000 miles....Original exhaust....Brakes done once (at 210,000 miles). No major problems at all. Of course I traded it for another Hyundai (2004 Tiburon GT SE)

Come on people..... The car was inexpensive to buy in the first place, right? 10yr/100,000 mile warrenty. Well you did not expect hyundai to put really expensive parts on it and still sell it for less than anybody else. I have seen them last the longest and best when the recomended maintenance is performed. They are good cars for the money and coverage.....

I bought my 2001 elantra brand new and quickly dumped it. what crap. peeling paint, disintegrating wheel hubs, door seals that would fall off, brakes that didnt stop. Mirrors that were opticaly distorted... almost non of it ever fixed despite many many trips to the dealer. Traded it in for a 2003 grand am Gt. not 1 problem in 31k miles. Id love to buy a santa fe, but my gut says stay far far away

I bought my wife a brand new 2001 Elantra from a dealership back in July of 2001 and we have not had one problem in 45,000 miles of driving. I've just kept up with all the recommended servicing (oil changes, tranny fluid change, etc). We don't drive the car very hard. I'm still using the stock Michelin tires that came new with the car, and still have the original brakes. I will be doing the brakes pretty soon though. It's an automatic and I have been pleasantly surprised with the car. Up here in Oregon/SW Washington, you can spot an Elantra within seconds. They're pretty popular over here.

The only complaint I would have is some interior noise from a panel that is loose. Other than that I would recommend this vehicle. Like most vehicles, you're going to have the good ones and the occasional lemon.

Welcome to the forum.

yeah the Elantra is one nice sturdy vehicle. As for the interior noise from the panel, being that you are still under warranty, I would take it in to the dealership on your next scheduled maintenence and have them locate and fix the noise problem.

While every new vehicle sold by any manufacturer can be labeled a lemon or disaster due to unforeseen circumstances such as the defective part, a union worker having a bad day, transporation occurances etc etc most are well built. This includes the Hyundai models. Me personally I would prefer the Hyundai models over the GM ones. But everyone is different and different needs. As for the Elantra you had being a crap, it could be possible, not every car is perfect, but I will say that the models are very well built. Proof of that is that customers are praising them which JD Power and others have mention in their surverys.

As for the Santa Fe, I have one and with all the vehicles I have had in the past from numerous makes I can honestly say that the Santa Fe is the best vehicle I have owned. In 3 years only two minor problems all of which were fixed due to the warranty. (It also depends on the service department you take it too, but thats for another thread).

When I bought my 2001 elentra, its odometer showed 49K. Now it's got 70+K. So far so good. Only preventive maintenance were performed such as oil changes, tires, brake pads, radiator hoses, etc. No timing belt done yet though.

I bought my 2001 Elantra used in Nov 2001. It had about 12,000 miles on it when I bought it, and now has 111,000 miles on it. All I've had to do with it is change oil, filters, replace tires, and other standard maintenance you have to do with any vehicle. My oldest son will turn 16 this fall, and he's already claimed the Elantra as his. By then it'll have at least 135,000 on it, and I fully expect him to put several thousand more miles on it. When I give him the Elantra, I plan on getting a Tuscon LX.

Mine is a 92, which is really a Mitsubishi at heart, with the 1.6 engine. I bought it from a guy in 97 with 89k, I had factory air and an Earl Scieb's paint job put on it, and I've been driving it ever since. Only maintenance I do is oil, coolant, and of course, the ever-important timing belt/tensioner/water pump change every 60k or so. A little less, actually. The first owner let the belt go 89,000 until it broke at 70MPH, and that forced him into a new engine, and I purchased the car for 1200.00 on the heels of the new engine installation. Nice, huh?

It's never been crashed, the electricals are good, and the only repairs have been one alternator, and the gearshift linkage at the stick, and the cable to the transmission. Car has 228,000 miles on it, I can't imagine how many shifts that is, but I figure I got my money's worth from the original cable and links! I'm religious about the oil changes (3,000 miles w/Mobil One 0W-40, and coolant changes every year (the red stuff, so you don't get the white deposits like with the green stuff).

Anyway, it's been a great little car, looks like new, and never leaves me stranded, and that's through a lot of pretty long drives to Florida, Massachusetts, and lots of trips of a couple hundred miles on weekends. It's not my primary commuter, but it is my primary long-haul vehicle due to the gas prices, so I'll think I'll keep it around for a while longer. Say, four or five years?

I own a '99 elantra wagon with 103,000 miles on it. I had to buy a new tranny because the old one gave up. I bought the car from some guy who lived in NJ and I had tranny problems from the day I picked up the car. The car had 62000 miles on it. I got a good deal for the car and everything was perfect about it inside out. paint was shiny and everything worked. (Except the 3rd gear of course). That didn't bother me. My friend owned a wagon before same year and he had a tranny from his previous car. I just swapped the tranny and my wagon is like brand new. Can't complain! The car is really fun to drive especially on highways. I will be changing the timing belt this weekend. So far I've spent $200 on tranny and $150 on installation. I own the car for a year and a half. Timing belt cost me $54 and the installation will cost me $100. The only thing I do is change the oil and fill it up with gas.

We have had our 2000 gls since July 2000, we bought it with 6000 miles on it and it now has almost 132000. It has had the regular maintainance; oil changes at 5000, timing belt at 70K, and then sparks and wires twice. The two complaints would be that bulbs seem to burn out fast and the power window regulators go. Still, for as much and as hard as we drive it, this is a keeper.

My wife bought a 99 elantra while we were in college with 12,000 miles on it. 6 years later it has over 145,000 and we have never had a problem. Standard maintenance brakes, plugs, wires, that's it still has original exhaust etc. Been a very reliable little car, still gets mid 30 mpg.

I bought a used 97 elantra 1.8 GLS with 15000 miles in 98. It has now 98000 miles. No major problems. Just normal maintenance: oil, filters, plugs, plug cables, belts, break pads, timing belt and timing chain. Engine works fine, revs fine, MPG is the same as when I bought the car. A/C works great.

My complaints are:
- cheap plastic parts (inside door handles and power window controls are a piece of sh*t)
- Weatherstrips are not good quality. I had to change the main weatherstrip on the drivers side because of windy noise on the highway. Car is still noisy on the highway. Probably the doors need to be tightened.
- Power windows are noisy. Probably the p/w engine has to be changed.
- Peeling paint. The paint does not resist any kind of bird droppings. If I leave a bird dropping for a day, it marks the paint. I have 2 cars, the 97 Elantra and a 98 Cirrus. They are both parked in the same place. The paint on the Cirrus looks brand new compared to the Hyundai.
- Hood ornament: it is made of plastic with "silver" alluminum foil around it. The foil has peeled off after all these years. Never seen that on other cars.

Probably my next car will be a Toyota Corolla. My brother has a 2000 one and he has had absolutely no problems at all.

72000 so far on mine, just replaced the spark plugs and wires, going in this week for a timing belt. So far seems to be fairly trouble free except for the clutch safety start switch which was replaced free of charge. The only annoying thing I can say is that the rear door seals do NOT like to stay seated and they have to keep be reglued onto the car. Other than that, not a bad car for the money (paid $6500 for it with 54,000 miles)

'02 Elantra with 101,455 mi... Had the exhaust manifold replaced at 49k and the brakes re-done... both ended up being warrenty and recall. Other than that, oil, plugs, TONS of HEADLIGHTS!!! I think 13 total.

atc2be - Then they charged me another $20 to install it!!! I go to their parts desk now and buy the bulb, but go out in the parking lot and install it myself.

It's a pain in the rump to install but I'll keep my $20 and do it myself as well!!!. I just get my bulbs at PepBoys, go home and install them. I have noticed one thing though....when my left headlight blows a bulb, after I change it, I need to realign it...weird but oh well...just takes a screwedriver and a dark night which conveniently appear regularly :-)

[QUOTE=atc2be] I have noticed one thing though....when my left headlight blows a bulb, after I change it, I need to realign it...weird but oh well...QUOTE]

I found that the bulbs have a slight angle to them, if you get the angle pointed down, you don't need to re-align. I had one guy put in a bulb that was pointed outwards and took it to another place and he pulled it out and told me about that.

Mine keeps going through tail lights, the bulbs are cheap enough but its a pain in the rear to keep replacing them, and I am getting tired of getting tired of getting pulled over by Phoenix's finest for no tail lights.
