I have a 99 metro 3 cyl. 5 speed with a bad transmission. I need to know what years I can use. I have been told I can only use from 95-2000 and also was told I can go back as far as 89. So what is the real answer to this question? Thanks

There are slight differences in the 5 speeds between years. The older model (88-94?) had a dipstick with the filler cap on top, instead of on the side. Also, the 5 speed out of the convertible had a lower top gear because the convertible was heavier and couldn't maintain highway speeds with the normal 5th gear. Other than that, I'm pretty sure they'll all bolt up to any engine, since the block and flywheel didn't change from year to year.

same question as sean.
i have a 96 with a four cylinder.
i have been told any tranny will work so i bought one from ebay
(there is a guy selling them all day for $125)
its a tranny for a three cylinder, but again everyone has told me it will work.
my next question though is which clutch do i get?
there are different part numbers for the three cyl clutch and the four cyl clutch. does it matter?
any help would be great.

thanks

You'd want the 4 cylinder clutch, as it would probably be stronger than the 3 version. The transmission mounting is the same on the 1.0, 1.3 and, i've heard, 1.6 our of the Tracker / Esteem. There shouldn't be any problem mounting the 3 cylinder 5 speed to the 4 cylinder.
