93 Escort LX Auto. only P, R, N, 1 work

My '93 Escort LX does not work in D, only 1st (and reverse).

On absolutely level ground (with a tailwind) the car barely moves in "D" position - higher RPM's don't help any.

1st and Reverse work fine, as do Park and Neutral.

I did notice that the trans. fluid dipstick shows possible excess fluid.

Any ideas?
