325i Automatic Transmission Problem

My 1990 BMW 325i with about 120K on it has started to shift "hard". I just noticed it especially in going from 3rd to 4th. It doesn't make noise, but I feel a thump in the 3 to 4 shift. Can anyone tell me what's wrong? How to fix it?
