Hi, as stated in the thread title, Will a Header, Intake, better exhaust hurt gas milage? I know it will add some,(allow power might be more accurate). What are the potential downsides to doing these basic mods? I have a 98 LX Civic that is primarily just a commuter. If it will enhance milage, I will gladly do the mods. Also, if it won't hurt milage per se, I will do the mods. Oh, and what is a good inexpensive header, and intake? Are the inexpensive eBay headers(ssautochrome) and intakes to be trusted? Thanks for everyone's help.

You want to stay away from that e-bay junk. I'v seen cheap headers crack and cause more damage then good. Stick with DC for headers. Now for intake they all do the same thing basically. I have always had AEM they do the job. Your gas milage will be affected cause once you get these mod you'll be flooring the car alot, like most of us do I am sure.

Definately go with AEM for the intake. Get the full cold air.. it's nice.

As far as I've heard, cold air intakes supposedly increase mileage.. but that could just be a rumor.

All factors involved. Bolt-ons will usually give you minimal gains. If not even losses.

Why? Because you won't be driving your car the same as you did before you put the parts on. I mean, seriously, who the hell puts i/h/e on their car only to drive like a granny? Believe me, you'll be stomping on that pedal more than you ever have before.

Enjoy. :smokin:

You sir have proven yet again you are very wise!

As it is ever so true. But as far as it goes you will get better milage by a little bit as far as pyhics go but yea you'll wanta hear that motor make noise and your powerband will shift and loss of low end will caues you to shift higher nulling the gains.

Signal you get 2 cookies for that post.

You want to save gas?
Ok, this is for the fun of it,
go to this site: they are "unknown secrets"
although it probably woudn't apply and you won't save gas since you WILl be flooring that pedal every chance you get.

I have I/H/E a JRSC@9.5psi running a little rich on a b16 for 4 + years.

I dont see a difference in the gas mileage.

B16 turbo @12psi. I say the gas mileage improved minorly. But that was tuned with hondata.

There should be a difference in the gas mileage, but, it is so minor with I/H/E, it is barley noticable.

Anyone who says their is a major difference needs to go get some basic maintenence done first.

This isn't proven, but it's been tossed around that minor mods will increase gas mileage even. Supposedly all the wasted gas that doesn't get burned does get burned since you are adding more air and releasing exhaust gasses quicker. Makes the motor more efficient I guess.

Well I know for sure because I anally write down my MPG every fill up since I purchased all my cars since 1996.

When I got my 2000 Civic Si it was getting 28-30mpg highway. Then I installed AEM CAI, A'PEXi N1 exhaust, and A'PEXi GT header and my MPG went up to about 32-35mpg.

But also realize when you install these parts you are going to run the car harder because you want to hear the parts :) Kinda double edge sword.

here's my 2 cents ....

I haven't seen it hurt. I run mine hard and get 35 MPG.

Giddy Up!!
