No wonder we love the Escorts. All of mine happen to be wagons.Too bad they are no longer manufactured.

i am thinking of buying a '95 ford escort lx. It has 150,000 miles and was in a fender bender, but everything was replaced and it has a little rust spot. What im asking is, the guy only wants 600 for it and to go along with this question is, are the Escorts good in snowy conditions(with the right tires) and does anyone else besides me think this is a good deal? Oh, it needs a new exhaust, but i was gonna replace it no matter what with some performance mods. thanx for any input

My '93 was great in the snow.I actually drove it last year instead of my Subaru AWD.I also think that is a good price for an Escort in good shape.

i got my escort for 900 bucks... was sitting for an estimated 6 mouths. 2000 dollars immediatly went into it sence it was probly never taken in for service with 258+ k km. great car in the snow and on the ice. Better then 86 Jeep Cherokee Lariodo (wich ment the fight of a rear collision) with 4x4. And now a good car that gets 70-80km to a gallon. though.. id watch the driver side rocker panel if i were you-water drains right down to it mine has basicly vanashed.

Oh.. forgot.. this one was in 2 front end, unreported, collisions by the pervious owner. (his body work didnt hide the damage so well)

No clue how much mileage was on it. Odo said ~37k. Engine's rebuilt now, with 193 miles on it. Runs like a champ. And to think, the car sat since '01. Did all work myself, so I put about 700 into the car, including new tires (200 bucks).

My '93 has 140k and I like it better than my 2003 sable. Drive the escort most days instead. I've replaced a few things, but it's never quit me, as long as it'll go I'll keep driving it. When it quits I'll rebuild it and go some more.

96k. This vehicle was wrecked and salvaged. I've had it since 60k. Had to replace spark plug wires 2x, plugs 1x, alternator, and put in a K&N air filter (nice), plus had the 02 sensor replaced. It gets 30mpg in town and about 37 highway.

I'm trying to be a home mechanic so I want to fix everything myself. I also need to replace the fuel sensor or whatever it's called b/c the car doesn't know how much gas it has in it.

Right now I'm working on putting in a stereo and contemplating air bags (none in it) there about $100 on ebay.

95 Escort LX 1.9L. 73,000 miles.
Bought used at 44,000.
Excellent gas mileage 40mpg in summer, drops maybe 5mpg in winter.
Had trunk leak, which required sealing all around weather stripping.
Replaced coolant temp sensor (indicated engine was cold when it wasn't).
Most recently car started stalling after stopping for 20 seconds or so. Engine code came up as 172 (HEGO sensor indicates lean idle), so I replaced HEGO sensor. Still had same problem. Went out the next morning and noticed the L shaped hose where the PCV feeds into the intake was collapsed, and had a pinhole in it. Replaced the hose and it runs fine again.
All-in-all a decent car, especially for what it cost.

my 94 LX has 183k on original engine, tranny just blew... plan to swap to 2.0 SPI engine and tranny and turbo it... had a 92 Wagon that ran me to 427k on original motor and trans... and died due to headgasket failure

Mine is a 91, I just bought off my sister for 500. I just did plugs, wires, O2 sensor and air filter. I also chucked the am/fm radio/paper speakers and put in a JVC CD deck and Pioneer 2way speakers. Much better.

I'm on the road, but when I get back to my parents house for Christmas, I'm doing an air box modification...that small small hole that the engine tries to breath through has to be restrictive as heck. It would be like my fat a$$ breathing through a straw.

Anyways, from what I'm reading here, I think I'll keep the car as a daily driver around for quite a while. The car gets good gas mileage(even with a shot stock O2/wires/plugs before I did the tune up. I just did the tuneup on Friday and drove 316 miles getting 37mpg. So I'm happy about that.

Has anyone put the clutch in themselves and if so...how difficult was it? How long did it take? Did you have air tools or hand tools? (I did mine in my TA but FWD you have to remove both half shafts and I'm not sure how much more of it is different).

i banged around ugly cold new hampshire and maine all last winter and dont have a single complaint about my 93 wagon, despite the lack of good tires.

i think 600 is a great deal, if there's nothing you don't know.

Yeah I replaced my clutch. I bought the Haynes manual and used that. IT was not really all that hard to do but it did take a long time. I was able to do it in about 8 hours over two days but I did have some help from a friend. He also had all the tools and a hoist. If you are comfortable doing it try it. But even if you have the slightest doubt dont try it.

I'm jumping in a bit late on this thread, but I own a '94 Tracer with just over 304K on the motor. Transmission finally replaced at 300K, and have only replaced spark plugs, timing belt three times, one water pump, and two fuel pumps. Bought the vehicle used with 6000 miles on it. It has suffered one deer strike, and living out here in rural Arizona, have replaced about 4 to 5 windshields before I gave up on that. It still gets 35mpg on the highway, and glad I bought this vehicle.

have a '99 and just blew engine with 75,000 miles. Looked like it droped a valve seat which hammered the #4 piston which then preceded to break whree it connects to the connecting rod pin. I hear that it isn't uncommon to drop the valve seat on escorts.

Im at 183K miles in my '93 manual wagon. i bought at 81K, with a weak clutch, replaced that, and its run like a champ since. i still get up to about 35 MPG on it, when i drive it (its on long term loan to my exwife so she has some transportation for the kids). AFAIK, no major work has been needed, other than that clutch, and a rear sway bar that was busted when i got it. My exwife has gone 11K miles with out an oil change, too. *mutters* Good little car, tho!

88' GT (1.9 HO) 5 Speed....386,000 miles. I've ran Mobil 1 (synthetic) since break-in.
Blew head gasket at 242K. Decided to ring engine at that time because of mileage, it was not using oil. Engine block was not worn, (pistons could be removed without cutting ridge) bearings were also in great shape...all went back standard. Car is driven daily with MPG around 33....Great car is an understatement.

I recently sold my 1993 Escort LX 2-door 1.9L 5-speed which I bought from the original owner in 1996 with 18,500 miles on it. It had 208,000 miles. Never had any major trouble but I did all my own maintenance including:

28 oil changes
5 sets of tires
4 brake jobs
3 timing belts/water pumps
1 exhaust manifold gasket
1 battery (original lasted 6 years, 131,000 mi)
1 clutch (at 127,000 mi - farmed this out to a auto repair shop)
1 set of struts and springs (all 4 corners)
1 set of tie rods (inner and outer)
1 alternator
1 set of front axles/CV joints
1 set of front ball joints
1 fuel pump

The biggest job of all was replacing the heater core at 167K miles - 8 hrs total work. Needed to dissassemble and remove the ENTIRE dash panel to get to the core.

I have a 98 4 door escort se 103218 miles on it, bought it at about 61k. Just got the alternator replaced because it went bad and the car died on me. I've had belts changed, wheel barings changed, I've had the control module for the air conditioning changed, it was the module that gives or takes away power from the air conditioning based on the throttle, and until it was replaced, one second my air conditioning would be nice and cool the next it would be muggy.

One of mine has 210K the other 85K same age. The killer is my 86 F-150 4X4 with 193K, translates into 19,300 gallons of gas run thru that old beast. I haven't spent $1000 total in repairs on all three. Just consistant maintainance.

92 Escort Wagon 525,198.3 Kilometers or 326358.2 miles and only replaced the trans once and motor never apart and would still be on the road if I wouldn't have hit someone head on. :banghead:

Granted the car was on the verge of falling apart with rust but I am sure I would have gotten it up to around 400,000 miles before it gave out altogether and now I am going to part the car out and keep the motor and trans.
