Proper CompressionCapt. Ron 10-18-2004, 06:19 PM What should the compression on a 92 Corolla be and what is the proper procedure for testing the compression? outthere2 10-19-2004, 06:19 AM This should be of some help. COMPRESSION CHECK HINT: If there is lack of power, excessive oil consump– tion or poor fuel economy, measure the compression pressure. 1. WARM UP AND STOP ENGINE 2. DISCONNECT COLD START INJECTOR CONNECTOR 3. DISCONNECT DISTRIBUTOR CONNECTOR(S) 4. REMOVE SPARK PLUGS 5. CHECK CYLINDER COMPRESSION PRESSURE (a) Insert a compression gauge into the spark plug hole. (b) Fully open the throttle. (c) While cranking the engine, measure the compression pressure. HINT: Always use a fully charged battery to obtain en– gine revolution of 250 rpm or more. (d) Repeat steps (a) through (c) for each cylinder. NOTICE: This measurement must be done in as short a time as possible. Compression pressure: 1,320 kPa (13.5 kgf/cm2, 191 psi) Minimum pressure: 981 kPa (10.0 kgf/cm2, 142 psi) Difference between each cylinder: 98 kPa (1.0 kgf/cm2, 14 psi) (e) If the cylinder compression in one or more cylinders is low, pour a small amount of engine oil into the cylinder through the spark plug hole and repeat steps (a) through (c) for the cylinder with low compression. • If adding oil helps the compression, chances are that the piston rings and/or cylinder bore are worn or damaged. • If pressure stays low, a valve may be sticking or seating improperly, or there may be leakage past the gasket. 6. REINSTALL SPARK PLUGS Torque: 18 N–m (180 kgf–cm, 13 ft–lbf) 7. RECONNECT DISTRIBUTOR CONNECTOR(S) 8. RECONNECT COLD START INJECTOR CONNECTOR Outthere Too. Capt. Ron 10-19-2004, 08:46 AM Thanks for the info. I did all that but with a cold engine. My two outer cylinders got oiled unintentionally. The valve cover seals were bad and the spark plug was submerged in oil so when I pulled the plugs the piston and rings got soaked in oil. They measured 220 each. The two inner cylinders measured 195 and 190. outthere2 10-19-2004, 09:04 AM Another Satisfied Customer. Oh! What a Feeling. Sounds like everything is fine, in the combustion chamber anyway. Outthere Two.... Capt. Ron 10-19-2004, 09:15 AM Yea the thing smokes a bit and is running quite rough. My oldest daughter got it really hot once making me thing it might have a warped head or bad head gasket. Possibly just bad valve guides?? vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
