This is for a 98 Escort Wagon --I've never had the cone type air filter before - went to change it by undoing the clamp and then it said to pull left. First there's a cartridge that's plugged into side (what is this? unplug this too?) I can't get it to open more than an inch to change the air filter. Do you pull to the left? up? how do you get to it? There's also a long screw to the left, should I undo this too? I'm used to the old butterfly screw on the lid air filter casing - need help with this one.
Also, when you turn the air on there's a strong moldy smell - is there anything I can do to fix this? Is there a cabin air filter somewhere - I didn't see it mentioned in my manual.

Ok, figured out the air filter - I just needed to pull it harder to open the holder. Any ideas on the moldy smell?
Is there another cabin air filter?

I dont think they made an escort with a cabin filter. The best way i could think to get the ducting clean is find a shop that does the BG service. Here is a link to the find the dealer on there webpage.
http://www.bgfindashop.com/ Good luck. The only other way would be to remove it all your self and clean it.

Thank you for replying - there was a place listed right near me so I'll give them a try.
