94 losing oil pressure at idlehx214 10-14-2004, 08:46 AM I have a 94' s-10 with 131,000 miles on her, and all of the sudden when the engine is warm, i'll stop at a light and the oil pressure will drop really bad, almost red lining. If I even tap the gas the slightest bit it jumps back up fine, but then will fall again. Then when I get off the highway doing 65-70 and come to a stop light, it will go so low that the check gauges light comes one. Again thought I get nervous and lean on the gas slightly to keep the pressure up at about 20. Any thoughts? I have just changed the oil at 130,000 and have noticed the pressure at about 130,500. It seems to do it worse when it is damp, light during or after a rain fall, which makes no sense to me... Any advise would be great, I don't want to lose my little truck to something stupid... busa_4 10-14-2004, 09:24 AM do you hear the engine knocking? if your oil pressure is dropping that low you should be able to hear some kind of knocking noise from your engine. most common noise would be the valve lifters. if you dont hear any noise out of your motor i would think your oil pressure sensor has failed or your cluster has failed. hx214 10-14-2004, 10:04 AM thanks what I was thinking to, but there is no change in the sound at idle. It sounds the same when it is cold and the pressure is up. I cant tell the difference. The only thing that bothers me is that when I do give it a little gas it does lift back to where it should be. I confused. busa_4 10-14-2004, 01:05 PM check your oil pressure sensor. i am unsure exactly where it is at on your vehicle but most of them are in the back behind the cylder head. it is a 1 or 2 wire sensor screwed into the oil passage in the block. if you remove that wire/s connector with the key on you should see your oil pressure gauge needle sweep all the way to one side. if you ground the wires you will get the opposite side. that will verify that your gauge is good and your oil pressure sensor is faulty. good luck! dmbrisket 51 10-16-2004, 11:48 PM i have a 91 1500, does the same thing, my dad has a 92 1500, that does it, and my 98 s 10 does it, its your sencor, its a chevy thing, no biggie, if you really wanna get it changed you can but i wouldnt worrie about it chiajake 11-30-2004, 05:43 PM i currently started having the same problem, besides the oil pressure gauge, also my fuel level gauge and my voltage gauge dropped down to basically nothing. dmbrisket 51 11-30-2004, 10:12 PM chiajake you might have a cluster problem, never looked into that at all, other then that it could be bad luck and your alt is bad, and your fuel gage could just be the old style float (depending on your year) so a little more info like year of the truck is nice chiajake 12-01-2004, 11:59 AM my s 10 is a 94 with the 2.2L 4 cylinder. basically when i am in neutral, manual trans, when at engine running temp. not always but sometimes, the the oil pressure red lines, the voltage gauge and the fuel gauge drop a little bit if not all the way. dmbrisket 51 12-01-2004, 02:53 PM i would say its a cluster malfunction dmbrisket 51 12-01-2004, 02:53 PM or possibly a lose connection somewhere chiajake 12-02-2004, 05:57 PM how would my cluster malfunction and how could that be fixed dmbrisket 51 12-02-2004, 06:05 PM how, that im not entirerly sure on, the fix would be to replace it with a new one/one from a scrap yard chiajake 12-02-2004, 06:10 PM thanks dmbrisket openheaders 12-06-2004, 11:10 AM I got a 97 4.3 with 135,000 that does the same oil pressure drop-but only when on the highway for a while. I was told this was normal for this many miles as the bearings were getting worn and just won't hold the oil pressure when the oil is hot. vtmecheng 12-06-2004, 01:41 PM My '95 does that a little too, along with the volt meter fluctuating a bit. I noticed if I tap on the cluster it all starts working fine, telling me there is some bad connection that I am not about to waist my time with. You could have the same problem. agmmech 12-06-2004, 08:54 PM Oil pressure sensor can leak causing drop in pressure at idle, below 10psi,but more likely worn bearings.Try lucas oil and see if it boosts pressure vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
