If it is the latter, you could have a problem with the slave cylinder (you have to pull the trans out to replace this) or as Ford says, it could be a build-up of clutch dust on the input shaft/throw-out bearing. I had to replace my slave cylinder at 140,000 miles because when the engine got hot, the clutch would not engage.
