2005 Camryrmenefee 10-13-2004, 07:10 AM OK, Just bought a 2005 camry 4Cyl. Only had it for 1 week, 32 miles. I know its too early for a case history on the 2005 but I am looking for help. Here is what happened. I was driving down my back alley about 5 mph, very slow. My parking pad is on the right. So I took my foot off of the break and turned the wheel to the right, no feet on any pedals (for sure). The wheel would not turn at all, almost like when the engine is off but it was not. Next, the car kept surging forward while both of my feet were crushing the break pedal to get it to stop. I crashed (very slowly) through two fences and landed in my neighbors back yard. The car now has bad body damage but no impact damage. While surging forward through the fences I was probably doing 10 MPH. I got it to stop by turning off the key. I am real mad, I am 42 not 92 and I know for sure I didn't hit the gas by mistake. Plus, why didn't the wheel turn? This tells me its a problem, duh? Not sure how to handle this. The car is in the body shop right now. I really dont feel safe driving the car and I dont want it anymore. Any ideas on how to proceed with this? Much appreciated: On my way to the bus stop. Bossman 10-14-2004, 05:28 AM I can only hope that you took pictures of all the damage BEFORE you took it to the body shop. You'll want to show the Toyota people. Please take your Camry back to Toyota just as fast as you can as you undoubtedly have an extremely unsafe car. All mechanical repairs to your car should be covered under your new car warranty. They should have caught this condition during the dealer prep or at least during the test drive. I was hoping that you were going to say that you put it in neutral when you felt the car surging forward as you were braking but I guess not. That may have saved the two fences and body damage. I sure hope Toyota rectifies this for you ASAP. Best of luck. don24mac 10-14-2004, 08:57 AM Doesn't sound like you're the only one. http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=270693 http://consumeraffairs.com/news04/toyota_surge.html That last link is a report on the 02 and 03 models. The 04 and 05 have the same configuration for throttle control. Check the NHTSA site: http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/ Mike Gerber 10-14-2004, 10:51 AM If you decide to take it back to Toyota, don't drive it there; have it towed back. There is no guarantee that this will not happen again, if it is a mechanical defect. Mike vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
